WTN: French Riesling And Savennieres

by R Cabrera » Sun Feb 24, 2008 11:56 am

With the Lenten season underway, we find ourselves drinking more whites than we usually do during the rest of the year. Here are my notes on a couple that we had on Friday:

2002 Domaine de Baumard Savennieres
As far as I can remember, this would probably be about the 3rd Savennieres that I may have ever drunk. In other words, I know close to nothing about these wines and I hope that I spelled it correctly.
This light golden-hued wine was crisp, with its firm fruit revealing waves of tropical fruits including lychees, pineapple, kiwi, and ripe blueberries and some lemon zest. At some point, it showed nose of petrol and more lychee. I liked the straightforward oomph that I got at every sip, plus it went very nicely with some fine goat cheese. I like these kind of white wines. B+

2000 Marcel Deiss Engelgarten Riesling
I love Rieslings from Alsace. These wines, to me, present some of the best food-friendly accompaniment amongst those that I have been accustomed to drinking.
Very aromatic bouquet of flowers, fruit, earth and sulfur. This wine came with layers of melon, cantaloupe, caramel and hard candy. Nice balance and structure. A-

Glad to hear that you liked the Savennieres. It is certainly a category worth pursuing further if you've only had a few.

Although I was intrigued by the blueberry descriptor! Red fruits I've found in white wines, but blue ones! A new challenge..

I admit that it did take me a while to get that blueberry notes, as it was something that I wasn't expecting from a white wine. I'm glad that I have another bottle to re-assess.

Could be the botrytis.

There was that element of the very, very slight honeyed sweetness that I associate with botrytis that may have caused me to detect the ripe blueberry notes. Now, I’ll be looking out for it with my next bottle. Thank you for your helpful comment.
