2002 Dönnhoff Oberhäuser Brücke Riesling Spätlese - Germany, Nahe (2/23/2008)
I am just starting to check in on the 2002 spatlesen, and this one is open and delicious right now. Lightly smoked pears with an overlay of red berry give way to minerals and salt spray. It smells heavenly, but the real fireworks are on the palate where the sweet fruit come through at the start, only to be washed away in a tidal wave of salty minerals. Moderately sweet, but balanced by crisp acids, this finishes just off dry. Delicious to drink now, but there's only upside for this wine, as there is plenty of fruit and sugar to burn for years to come. It's going to be very hard to keep my hands off of my remaining bottles. Wine of the year to date.
