Open that Bottle Night

by Howie Hart » Mon Feb 18, 2008 11:34 am

I've never heard of this before, but it sounds like a fun idea. There was a link to this on another website.
Open that Bottle Night - Saturday, February 23rd.
Chico - Hey! This Bottle is empty!
Groucho - That's because it's dry Champagne.

The SBs look OK to me but the choice of either Yellow Tail Merlot or the one from Delicato? I am not so sure.
But yeah, a fun idea for non-wine geeks. They only list 2 Prosecco, shame on them!!!!

Bob - understand that the recommendations come from Consumer Reports, which is in the business of telling the world what are the best quality mass-market products. You're not going to see imagination or breadth of choices from them. In fact to wine geeks, most (if not all) of their choices suck.

And the website that is linking Open That Bottle Night to a Consumer Reports listing of wines is completely missing the point.

The wine writers from the WSJ talk up OTBN every year in their column. I believe they came up with it (I could easily be wrong on that).

Absolutely, it says so on the bottom of the link. I got in on the very first celebration with a 1985 Cheval Blanc, and so reported to the WSJ duo. They telephoned me to talk about my experience and then published my letter, as there were very few folks involved at that time. Bob Ross remembered reading it. Even in 2000 the world was a lot smaller.

Their column is the reason I became interested in wine to begin with. I began snagging my boss's copies to read at lunch, and discovered the wine column a couple of years ago.
