Wine store in Detroit?

by Bob Hower » Sun Feb 10, 2008 1:34 pm

I'm going to be travelling to the north suburbs of Detroit tomorrow on business. Can anyone reccommend a good wine shop thereabouts? I'm looking to find a few things that may not be available here. Thanks.

I've never been to Detroit (aside from the airport), but Putnam Weekley is a participant on Therapy, and used to be the buyer at Cloverleaf. Seems like an excellent shop in the Alternative Wine mode.

Stop in Toledo, Ohio on your way (are you driving up I-75?). Any of The Andersons Retail stores have excellent wine departments - I know folks who travel from all over Ohio to buy at their wine shops. I probably purchase 90% of my wines there. Very knowledgeable staff, very wide selections (including wide selection of prices).

you might try papa joe's in birmingham. if you have time to get to ann arbor, try village corner or morgan and york. the latter is a kermit lynch outlet - the former a huge selection of intersting stuff.

Excellent. Thank you. Edie, I see Andersons has locations in both Lima and Toledo. Since I will be driving up I-75 and passing through both, is the Toledo one better (since it's a bigger city) or would the Lima one be as good (smaller city, probably less trouble to get to)? Maybe I could go for broke and go broke both and do ALL the stores mentioned. :D

I'll be honest - not sure where the one in Lima is. I've shopped at the store in Maumee (close to I-475/US-223 N), in Toledo (off I-475 about 3 miles west of I-75N) and the Sylvania Marketplace. Both Maumee & Toledo have similar sized wine shops, the Sylvania store is slightly smaller and a tad farther from the expressway (they're groceries items only as opposed to the other stores which carry all sorts of things - they're a hard store to describe). I find the the Toledo store a little easier to get through - but that may simply be because I'm more familiar with their layout.

Hi Bob, I don't recognize you so I am thinking that you might be new to the forum. Plus I see that you are in Louisville while I am in Lexington, so I'll try to take care of you and not steer you wrong. I have friends in Detroit who manage a wine emporium called Wine Buys and will of course be very receptive to forum residents. Geo T and Kim are long time wine lovers and friends so just mention my name. They have only just gotten involved with managing this location so I am not sure exactly where it is located, but here is the number. Toll Free 866-976-VINO (8466), and the URL http://www.winebuys.com/ click the link and check them out. They are in the store from 9am to 5PM so if you call just ask for one of them.

Bob:

I would suggest a few possibilities, depending upon where you are headed and what your particular interests are.

1) Winebuys is a good all-purpose source, and Geo T is a top notch fellow.

2) If you're looking for off the beaten path stuff (e.g. - esp Loire, Germany, and a range of other very good selections), then Cloverleaf is a great suggestion. I'd look them up and call first, to make sure they're open (http://www.cloverleafwine.com)... they are closed one weekday and are going to be moving soon (can't recall the date).

3) If you're going out towards Ann Arbor, the Village Corner is a great choice with a fairly wide selection, but are especially deep in German wines.

4) North end of Detroit (e.g. - Rochester Hills/Troy) has Red Wagon Wine Shop (go to the one by M-59, not Maple and Crooks). They currently have a fair number of '03 and '04 Bordeaux.

5) Champanes (13 Mile between Mound and Van Dyke in Warren) also has a wide selection, low prices, and probably carries more US selections than any of the others.

Jim, it is apparent that you know the wine stores in the Detroit area far better than I do. I wanted to chime back in to say that Cloverleaf either has, or soon will be moving their location.. I know a new location has been found, but am not exactly sure where it is going to. As for Ann Arbor, I sure agree with the recommendation of the Village Corner, http://villagecorner.com/ and I would also recommend Morgan and York http://www.morganandyork.com/ located at 1928 Packard. When I go to Mo'Cool I always stay out on Plymouth near the US 23 intersection, and this makes it an easy trip to hit both the VC and M&Y. One more store with a better than decent selection is Bello Vino which is located on Plymouth less than a mile from the US 23 intersection. http://www.bellovino.com/

David, Geo T. And Kim Adams just took over management of this and as they also run the website known as the Gang of Pour, they are pretty internet savvy, so I am sure they will improve the Wine Buys web site. As to location of the store, it is at
Winebuys.com 10657 Galaxie Ferndale, MI 48220 248.658.1081 Toll Free 1-866-976-VINO (8466). Dan, have you attended Mo'Cool? or is it just that in my old age I am becoming forgetful? I fully plan on attending Mo'Cool 2008, and if all else fails, I, and some others will re-do Semi Cool again in '08.

Bob:

The new Cloverleaf location will be in Royal Oak, near downtown (I believe it will be in a building that was used as a powerstation for the old streetcars): http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&g ... -83.144087 (click the Streetview button to pan and see the building)

I haven't been to Bellovino or Morgan & York... I live north end of Troy, so AA/Canton/Plymouth/etc is the other side of the planet, relatively speaking.

David:

Winebuys is relatively new to MI, and isn't a brick and mortar, strictly speaking. However, George is a trustworthy guy, both from the perspective of wine recommendations and buying from him (IMO).
