WTN: More wine notes

by Florida Jim » Fri Feb 08, 2008 9:51 am

2005 Kim Crawford, Unoaked Chardonnay:
Smells sweet but has pleasant chardonnay fruit scents; is way too sweet on the palate with a cloying, canned pears syrup type of delivery and bears very little resemblance to wine. Very odd stuff considering I have found other vintages of this at least tolerable. 13% alcohol, imported by Vincor USA and price unknown; I wouldn’t buy it at any price.

2006 Edmunds St. John, Gamay Rosé Bone Jolly:
I think this is getting darker color as it ages; wonderful strawberry/raspberry scents with a vinous note and some mineral; much the same in the mouth with a juicy snap of acidity. ‘Half way through my second case and loving it.
13.2% alcohol and about $17; charming stuff.

Diane took spaghetti squash, used it as pasta and topped with a porcini, tomato reduction ragout and served it with crusty bread. To accompany, we tasted two really fine wines:

2004 Puffeney, Trousseau Les Bérangères:
Quite aromatic and complex on the nose; lots of black and red fruit flavors with earthy, stony, smoky nuance, good acidity, excellent concentration and considerable grip; tannic finish. The tannins seemed to melt away with the dish and the earthy nature of the wine came to the forefront. An exceptional wine and a symbiotic pairing. 13.5% alcohol, imported by Rosenthal and about $28; I believe it is worth the price but that is right at the limit I would spend.

2005 Philippe Faury, St. Joseph:
Smells like young Hermitage, is extremely complex with its leather, olive, meat and garrique elements complimenting supple fruit flavors, has a satin texture, is round in the mouth and finishes long and detailed. Quite a wine that is complete and approachable now but certainly has the ability to develop over time. 12.8% alcohol, imported by Kermit Lynch and about $25; I’m going back for more.

Best, Jim

Boy. I need to make a short trip to Berkeley. That Syrah sounds fantastic!

I probably should stay away from Kermit Lynch, though. I would ruin my credit card balance.

Jim,
I have a real thing against goofy names but since it was Steve I picked up a bottle of the '06 Bone Jolly. I usually only drink rose in warm weather and the strawberry notes seem to also create a challenge. When, and with what, do you drink this wine?

Walt,
90% of the time, its a warm afternoon and I drink it in an old fashioned glass with ice cubes; all by its lonesome. When I have it with food, its usually with appetizers or a cold plate.

Walt; It's wonderful with pork, with sausages, charcuterie, salumi, roast chicken, salmon, various pasta dishes, both meat-based and vegetarian, and so forth and so on. Though I admit to being prejudiced, my question would more likely be what wouldn't you eat with it? :D

Steve,
Using my imagination I can imagine it going very well with a grilled Italian sausage, maybe topped with some onions. Got it.

You would be interested in knowing a wine store in So Ill has picked up some of your wines and selling them for reasonable prices. I will support him since he is an old world wine geek and is in it for the love of it and just trying to make a living. No yellow tail in this store. I picked up your '04 Rocks and Gravel there last weekend. You have a bad market chain in St. Louis so that is why I just buy direct from you.

Walt,
The Bone jolly rose is great with pasta carbonnara.
The parmesean and bacon in the sauce go really well the forward red fruits in the wine.

Walt, count yourself lucky. Nothing from ESJ here in Alberta at all.

I love their Sauvignon Blanc, but their Chardonnay is very mediocre. I don't understand how they can do one wine so well and the other so poorly. I had very high hopes for the Crawford chard when I first tasted it.

Walt, I've found that this wine has a particular affinity for spaghetti al pesto.
