dessert wine

by Bob Collins » Thu Feb 07, 2008 1:13 pm

I have a bottle of creme sherry and a chocolate cake. Do I serve them together or one in front of the other or can I only serve one for a dessert?
Thanks.

Probably lots of opinions but if I am serving a sweet after dinner drink I tend to serve the dessert and then the drink. Another problem is that chocolate is a hard match. My preference would be the cake with coffee and then a small glass of the dessert wine.

Bob,

I don't have a ton of experience with creme Sherry, but I don't think that it will go well at all with your chocolate cake. I would suggest a fruit parfait, some nuts, or both. I don't even like chocolate very will with Banyauls, and that is supposed to be the dream match.

Bob, some will claim that like champagne, one can drink sherry throughtout a meal with the right recipes!! Like others here, I would avoid with cakie!! There has to be a cheese out there one might match up with but I am stumped for ideas right now (grin).

Bob, there isn't a right or wrong here, but like others I would serve the cake (as a nice break from the wines presumably served with dinner) and then the dessert wine to linger over while you and your guests ponder the ills of the world. About the only time I serve the wine and dessert together is when the wine is a cookie, like chocolate chip cookies with port, or biscotti with something cold, sweet and blonde.
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov
