I think that is a good article, Alex, partly because it confirms my own prejudices. However just to show that Bordeaux does not have it all its own way, here is an article about a Davos tasting of 2001 top Cabernets where leading Bordeaux showed poorly - http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/3955b1d6-d053 ... fd2ac.html.

BTW I spotted in the NYT article the plural of "château" spelled with an "s". To a francophile this shocks and I don't think that I have ever seen this done in a British publication. As a professional translator, what do you think about it?

I'm not sure what good it does to compare wines that are built for the cellar to wines that are built for more immediate consumption, particularly when the conditions were so different. This is a surprise to me, because wines from the cool Bdx vintage of 2004 were preferred to the softer plusher wines of the warmer California vintage of 2004. Usually, the California wines, and almost always the softer plusher earlier to enjoy wines, win that kind of contest. But I guess I think it is kind of silly to make the comparison at all. It makes for a fun tasting, but as something to learn to take to other years - nah!!!!
