Good seafood in Portland, OR?

by Robin Garr » Mon Feb 04, 2008 6:17 pm

Posting here and in Travel: I've had Email from a gentleman who's looking for good advice about a good, memorable seafood/fish restaurant in Portland, Oregon, preferably within walking distance of the Hilton, although cabbing it is okay.

He's not forum-savvy so I didn't direct him here, but will gladly pass on any advice here. I spent a little time in Portland on my day job back in the '90s but mostly remember Chinatown and brewpubs, and the Widmer brewery in the Heathman hotel, which apparently is no more. (The brewery, I mean, not the hotel.)

Any good advice for him? Also posted in WLDG. If we get good responses, I'll eventually merge the threads as an archive here.

Does anyone know how the restaurant at the Heathman is? I'm there for the next couple of days.

Your life is so hard, but I guess someone has to live it. 8)

That's a pretty nice place to spend a couple days, Stuart.

We'll see. The photos on the website look appealing, but who knows what tricks of photography were used to make a rat-hole room look like a 2000 square foot suite?

Barrel distortion. Must be it.

I am sure that Widmer still makes beer. Did you mean that the brewery is no longer located in the hotel?

Despite the James Beard Award-winning chef, I skipped the Heathman's restaurant after seeing the menu. Carnivores would be happy there, though, and it looked quite nice.

Yeah, ambiguous wording on my part. I meant that Widmer no longer has a brewpub in the Heathman.

Also, as a separate matter, didn't Widmer sell out to one of the industrial mega-brewers, or am I making that up>?

They may have, Robin, though I am not sure.

Looks like a sort of open question. According to Beervana, the Oregon Breweries Website, "Widmer Brothers Brewing Company
Founded: 1984
Ownership: In 1997, the brothers created a "strategic partnership" by selling a minority share of the company to Anheuser-Busch in exchange for access to AB's vast distribution network."

The good news is that the brothers apparently still have a controlling share. The cynical assumption is that Augie Bush and his goombas have more than a little influence. Could go either way, but I'm sure this is what I was thinking about.
