Looking for good seafood in Portland

by Robin Garr » Mon Feb 04, 2008 6:16 pm

Posting here and in Travel: I've had Email from a gentleman who's looking for good advice about a good, memorable seafood/fish restaurant in Portland, Oregon, preferably within walking distance of the Hilton, although cabbing it is okay.

He's not forum-savvy so I didn't direct him here, but will gladly pass on any advice here. I spent a little time in Portland on my day job back in the '90s but mostly remember Chinatown and brewpubs, and the Widmer brewery in the Heathman hotel, which apparently is no more. (The brewery, I mean, not the hotel.)

Any good advice for him? I'll also post this in Travel.

Robin,
I am an infrequent traveler to Portland (every other Xmas since '89) so take my advice FWIW: Jake's Famous Crawfish is an old institution there (and progenitor to the McCormick & Schmick's chain) and not that far from the Hilton; Southpark Seafood and Wine Bar is another option and within easy walking distance of the Hilton. Frankly, neither place rings my bell, Portland not really being a seafood Mecca in my experience. Given my druthers, I'd hit the Joel Palmer House or the Wildwood, but seafood wouldn't figure prominently in either place, and neither is that close to the Hilton (JPH would be a fair hike, actually). Actual residents of the area can give you more detailed and accurate advice, I'm sure.

Robin; One can do pretty well at the Heathman Hotel; the food has been quite good when I've eaten there, they've had a good wine program, and while they don't specialize in fish, they do it well.
I don't know just how I'm supposed to play this scene, but I ain't afraid to learn...

Jakes is a definate for someone new to Portland and looking for a piece of history. It's been there forever and is a place I always know guests will walk away feeling like they "experienced" River City. The food is wonderful and represents the Pacific NW well, the staff has been there years, the martini's rock and the wine list isn't too shabby either.
Hope this helps

For seafood served Peruvian style, try Andina (http://www.andinarestaurant.com/) at 13th and Glisan NW. We were there with a good size group in a private room last summer. The place is extremely popular and gets packed; better call for a reservation. A bit of a long walk from the downtown hotels, and 8-10 blocks from two of my favorite Portland stores: Powell's Books and Vinopolis Wine Shop.

Robin - even though it isn't 100% seafood, I recommend OBA in Portland (menu link = http://obarestaurant.com/new/dinner.html) I'll also 'second' the Jakes recommendation.

Jon; Oba looks intriguing, but I couldn't see any indication of where they are or how to contact them.

Steve, look at the bottom center of the page (the grey area). There should be address, ph # and map provided there. In case you can't see it for whatever reason, here it is:

555 NW 12th Ave
Portland, OR 97209
Tel 503.228.6161

Additionally, Steve, if you take any Internet address (URL), delete all the letters and things to the right of the ".com", you'll usually end up with the home page of the entity.
