Wine Question and Hello

by Vernie Hatthorn » Mon Feb 04, 2008 1:01 pm

Hello to everyone on this forum, I have enjoyed reading all your comments as a person who isnt new to wine but not really very knowledgable either I have learned many things by reading this forum. We are a couple with an empty nest and time to spend on ourselves enjoying life and good wine. I do have a question that was asked of me and I thought this would be the place to find an answer because I just dont know.

I was presented with a bottle of wine and asked if it was still any good and if it had value. I honestly dont know but thought some of you might here is what the label says.

Quien
Red Bordeaux
Saint Julien appullation
controllee
produced & bottled by
Quien of Cie
Bordeaux France
copr. 1933

The small label around the neck of the bottle says
1969 in the center in bold
established in Bordeaux 1877

I am guessing the year of harvest to be 1969 but unsure.
The bottle has a metal seal over and the cork that is intact
The bottle was evidently store cork up as it has about 1 1/2 inches of sediment in the bottom of the bottle. I think it must be ruined by now but dont know, does it possibly still have value or not and if so what would be a good value range for the bottle??? It does not belong to me but a friend who got it from her aunt.
Thanks for any insight you can give

Vernie, thanks for your bringing your question to WLDG. Unfortunately, there isn't good news for your friend. 1969 was a poor year and Quien is just a negociant firm (meaning, not a producer who makes wines from estate grapes but someone who buys surplus grapes or juice and bottles it) and not considered collectable.

Vernie, the dollar value is zero but it's always fun to open an old bottle of wine and see what happens. Jenise is right: your friend's bottle is a negociant wine made from grapes collected from anywhere in Bordeaux. It was probably not worth much more than a couple of dollars four decades ago and I suspect it's not drinkable now, but you never know until you pop the cork.

Not quite as bad as that Clint - the bottle says the wine is from the more prestigious sub-area of St-Julien. And again, if the bottle is to believed, Quien did actually make the wine, even if they bought in the grapes. Here's what seems to be a straight Quien Bordeaux 1967 selling for $30: http://www.grandibottiglie.it/cat085.php?n=9&prod=16 .But I wouldn't let that get up your hopes too much, Vernie!

Steve
Quiet about Grandi Bottiglie  they're a favourite little haunt in Northern Turin and I don't want these guys clearing them out

Steve, I guess I better clean my glasses. I didn't pick up on the St-Julien appeelation in Vernie's initial posting.

One cautionary thing to keep in mind:

1969 was one of the WORST VINTAGES EVER for the Bordeaux region. Even the very best estates made really poor wine. This negociant is a long way away from being one of the best estates. Because of that, this wine has just about zero value on the resale market.

There's a tiny chance this wine might still be alive, and might even be something less than completely vile. You never know. So open it up and try it out. But don't expect much. There's a small chance it might be reasonably pleasant. But I wouldn't lay any money on that.

Sorry to be the messenger of bad news.
