WTN: 2002 Nicolas Joly, “Les Clos Sacrés”

2002 Nicolas Joly, Savennières “Les Clos Sacrés”, Loire, France
Nicolas Joly is the icon of biodynamic viticulture and his TOP wine “Coulée de Serrant” a legend. Savennières “Les Clos Sacrés” is the entry-level of the portfolio. The Savennières appellation is in the Anjou region of the Loire.
Attention, this wine is an assault on your taste buds! This wine made by Chenin blanc has an amber colour with an unique flavor profile of wild flowers, caramel, apricot pulp, beeswax and a chalky minerality. Impressive lingering finish. Not everbodys cup of tea, but in a world suffering of no shortage of average wines, this wine stands out. Fascinating wine, full of personality and with real intellectual appeal. Prolonged decanting (12-24h.) is also recommendable for the Joly wines and of course they have a long-aging potential. Good food-wine, too. This wine rocks!

Hello Martin,

I share your enthusiasm for Joly and his wines. Along with Germany, Alsace and Austria, the Loire is a region that I hold very close to my heart and the wines of Savennières are near the top of my list. The last wine I tasted was an '04 Clos de la Bergerie just to get an idea of how long I should hold back on these (10-12 years for the Bergerie I think.) They get rather expensive in the US -the Coulee de Serrant is about 80 USD - I am reluctant to open them until they are aged. Still, what a deal for such a magical wine! Thanks for the note.

Hello Bill,

I paid only 18 Euro for this wine. And the 2002 Coulée de Serrant would cost 52 Euro in Berlin. Indeed, these wines from the Loire are marathon-runner.

That's about on par then, given the weakness of the dollar.
