WTN: My first taste of Hunter Valley Semillon

by Saina » Fri Feb 01, 2008 3:32 pm

The 2004 Tulloch Semillon Julia Limited Release (11% abv) smells strongly of red soil that has been rained upon and limes and minerals. It's quite exciting with such a prominent bass note and then the soprano citrus notes but no alto tones to bridge them. The palate is fruitier than I was led to believe from comments on the style, but it is electric and tannic; intense but not as hard-core as I hoped and expected. I love it! This is has the chiselled clarity of line of Palestrina's Polyphony.

The 2005 (10%) seems flabby in comparison. The nose is lovely, not as strongly red toned or as muddy as the '04, with the citrus more prominent and a waxy note holding the bass line. This lacks the intensity and electricity of the '04 but is still moderately acidic and tannic. If the '04 was Palestrina, I guess this would remind me of Clemens non Papa - a bit similar in style to Palestrina, but just not as interesting!

Welcome to the club there, Otto. I think you are bound to find some Semillons that might be a tad flabby.
The problem is knowing how long to age in the cellar!! It`s trial and error sometimes.

From what I have read, I should emphatically not find Hunter Valley Semillons flabby. And the '05 was a touch flabby only in comparison to the '04 - I guess I didn't emphasise that point enough initially!

Tonight both are still wonderful: the '05 showing a more elegant style than yesterday; the '04 being as forceful and unique as yesterday. I certainly like the '05 better today - maybe I should buy a ton of each to cellar! :)
