WTN: Many wines short notes

by Daniel Källberg » Fri Feb 01, 2008 1:11 pm

Tasting notes from a trade tasting 2 weeks ago. A lot of people and very little time with each wine. Feel free to ask about any of the wines, I can perhaps add more information.

  • 1998 Bernard Hatté Champagne Special Club - France, Champagne (2/1/2008)
Red apples and toffee/nougat on the nose, almost seems sweet. Full bodied and rich starting to mature, some acitidy to keep it balanced. I will be buying this.
  • 1999 Pierre Peters Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut Cuvée Spéciale - France, Champagne, Le Mesnil Sur Oger, Champagne (2/1/2008)
Fresh and very acidic with beautiful exotic fruit. Good length, built for many years to come. Great wine.
  • 2000 Moccagatta Barbaresco Bric Balin - Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco (2/1/2008)
Maturing color with lilac, tar and coffe on the nose as well as the palate. Complex with a nice structure and length, still heavy on tannin but there seems to be sufficient fruit as well. No were near ready but really delicious.
  • 2000 Trimbach Gewürztraminer Cuvée des Seigneurs de Ribeaupierre - France, Alsace, Alsace AOC (2/1/2008)
Fat thick and oily just as i like gewutrz. Spices, sweet pears and marmelade. Very good wine.
  • 2001 Trimbach Riesling Clos Ste. Hune - France, Alsace, Hunawihr, Alsace AOC (2/1/2008)
To me this was a toned down version of the FE. Perhaps a bit more complex and much more delicate, for now this is a good wine. But aging will surely be rewarding. However when taking the price into consideration I would choose 3 bottles of the FE over 1 bottle of this.
  • 2001 Trimbach Riesling Cuvée Frédéric Emile - France, Alsace, Ribeauvillé, Alsace AOC (2/1/2008)
So very young it's hard to belive this is in fact a 7 year old wine. This is all mineral and lemon, starting to get complex but this needs time. Nice finish will buy as much as I can afford.
  • 2004 Domaine Leflaive Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Clavoillon - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru (2/1/2008)
Very interesting nose of vanilla and roasted coconut flakes. However the palate is not giving away very much, is this perhaps closing up? Nice wine but I'm not sure what to make of this.
  • 2004 Domaine Meo Camuzet Clos Vougeot - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru (2/1/2008)
Spices red fruit and some oak. Complex with good length, would've been nice to follow this over a couple of hours. Very good wine.
  • 2004 Domaine Meo Camuzet Marsannay - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Marsannay (2/1/2008)
Earthy with cherries and herbs(perhaps even green?) The finish is slightly thin and bitter. OK
  • 2004 Domaine Meo Camuzet Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Chaumes - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru (2/1/2008)
Mineral, spice and orangepeel on nose and palate. Red fruits as well. Complex wine and very nice to drink. Would love to have some.
  • 2005 Domaine Meo Camuzet Bourgogne - France, Burgundy, Bourgogne (2/1/2008)
Basic pinot, tart cherries light bodied. Good but nothing special.
  • 2005 Elena Walch Müller-Thurgau Alto Adige - Südtirol - Italy, Trentino-Alto Adige, Alto Adige, Alto Adige - Südtirol (2/1/2008)
Spicy on the nose. Mineral, green apples, seemed thick on the palate. Not sure what to make of this.
  • 2005 Luciano Sandrone Dolcetto d'Alba - Italy, Piedmont, Alba, Dolcetto d'Alba (2/1/2008)
Oak, milkchocolate with orange and vanilla. Then tannic on the finish, no thank you. Did I say this was oaky?
  • 2005 Martín Códax Bierzo Cuatro Pasos - Spain, Castilla y León, Bierzo (2/1/2008)
There's a lot going on here, dark fruit, black pepper. Full of tannin and almost seems soapy to me. Needs time to mellow out i think.
  • 2006 Jean-Paul Droin Chablis 1er Cru Fourchaume - France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru (2/1/2008)
So very young, hard with mineral green apples. Difficult to judge at this stage but should come out great. Great wine.
  • 2006 Jean-Paul Droin Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos - France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru (2/1/2008)
In some ways similar to Fourchame. But more concentration, very complex with good length. This will require patience.
  • 2006 Pirie Chardonnay - Australia, Tasmania (2/1/2008)
Good chardonnay, fresh with mineral and green apples, but nothing I will seek out.
  • 2006 Pirie Pinot Noir - Australia, Tasmania (2/1/2008)
Sweet raspberries and some earthy aromas. Good fruit, acid and tannin on palate. Medium length/bodied. Good wine would probably buy.
  • 2007 Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc - New Zealand, South Island, Marlborough (2/1/2008)
Nettles, currantleaves, asparagus everything i expect to find in a Sauv B. Fresh medium bodied with a nice finsh.
  • N.V. Le Mesnil - Coop Champagne Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Le Mesnil - France, Champagne, Le Mesnil Sur Oger, Champagne (2/1/2008)
Typical BdB champagne, mineral, citrus and bread on the nose. Crisp with nice fruit, very good QPR. I will seek this out.
  • N.V. Ruinart Champagne "R" de Ruinart Brut - France, Champagne (2/1/2008)
Fresh and clean with flowers and citus on the nose. Light bodied, delicate and easy to drink. Didn't stand out though.
  • N.V. Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin Champagne Brut Rosé - France, Champagne (2/1/2008)
Very light with raspberries on the nose, pale red color. Easy to drink, fresh with good acidity. Miles ahead of the white NV.

I haven't yet had the '00, but previous vintages of this have been some of the most impressive Gewurzes I've ever tried. But fat, thick and oily? The previous ones weren't so in comparison to other Gewurzes, but were rather mineral and elegant for the grape.

Nice collection of wines, Daniel. What kind of event was this? I wonder, since I can't identify any theme of the tasting and I can't think of one Swedish importer representing all these wines. Maybe a restaurant showing their wine list?

Some more info about the Moccagatta would also be nice.

Perhaps I should have posted a big discalimer at the top. This is really not my kind of tasting, I need more time with each individual wine to give a fair assessment. So Otto:
Yes that was my impression, but also note that I tasted this alongside a row of riesling and chablis. I have no previous experience with this wine in other vintages. In fact it's been a long time since I tasted gewurtz comprehensively but after your comment this seems to be a wine for me to seek out, since I'm a fan of more elegant wines.

Anders:
This tasting was a showcase of Vinalliansens products. Ah yes the Moccagatta for me the highlight of the tasting. I really enjoyed this and found it to have more or less everything i look for in nebbiolo. Except for the fact it was to young, good amounts of tannin, fruit and acid. The oak wasn't over the top, I'm not sure what more to tell you unless you have a specific question. Once again this was my first time with this wine and producer.

Right, I did in fact think about Vinalliansen since they have quite an eclectic assortment of wines, also of many that also other importers have. I have wondered how this can be the case. They will have the same tasting here in Stockholm on Monday. If I find time for it, I have planned to sneak in for a little while and now that I know there might be a Moccagatta for tasting, I will try harder to get there. I tasted the 1996 Bric Balin when we were in Piemonte in October last year. Except for a slightly odd note of petrol in the nose, it was a splendid wine. I bought a couple of 2004s at the regional enotecha in Barbaresco, but will have to wait for them to come around for quite a while, I think. If I also get to taste that Trimbach Gewurz, I'll let you know if I find it fat or not.
Ciao, Anders
