WTN: Broquel Malbec 2005

by Bruce Hayes » Sun Jan 27, 2008 11:16 am

Mendoza.
Bodegas Trapiche.

Very dark purple in the glass.

Rich, spicy, peppery, blueberry fruit, tobacco, tangy acidity, with a bit of alcohol shrillness toward the end.

Purchased at $15.85 (Canadian).

I love this good-value wine, and I think that despite their huge size, Trapiche's wines have just got better and better under their unassuming chief winemaker Daniel Pi. I read a great quote from him that made me smile:

"When I started, it wasn't well known as a profession. A winemaker was a drunk with a title."

If anyone has access to Trapiche's single vineyard Malbecs - at a much higher price-point - do try them, these are excellent wines, each one with a story (written about on my blog, which I would dare not link to here!). The idea behind these wines is that each vintage, Trapiche selects three of its grape growers to highlight by making an unblended wine just from their fruit and then featuring the name of the grower on the label - it's a lovely way of showing 'they care' about their growers and apparently the growers are really proud to be included in the scheme.

Bruce... did you decant the Broquel..? I sometimes like to give these everyday wines a chance to show what they do after a good 90 minutes in a decanter. Also, I would observe strict service temperature.

No, it wasn't decanted. Will keep that, and the note about temperature, in mnd for the future. Thanks.

I was able to try a few of these single vineyard Malbecs. Great wines. I didn't know the story behind them, though. Thanks for the additional info.
