WTN: Zin from Dry Creek Valley

by Shaji M » Sat Jan 26, 2008 8:39 pm

Opened a 2001 Lake Sonoma Winery Zinfandel from Dry Creek Valley last night. Often, an older Zin takes on this acetone like nose (not necessarily unpleasant) and acquires a certain sharpness. This one however, had evolved very well. It was quite perfumey and we found ourselves inhaling from the glass and going "Aaaaah". Very floral nose and cedar on the nose. The raspberry fruit was still very evident and the tannins had mellowed down well. Quite a silky wine with a long finish. I saved the dregs in my glass just to smell with the remnants of my dinner and finished it with great reluctance and sadness :( . At least I have one more bottle left. :)
Interestingly a Zin that had a similar effect on me was also from Dry Creek Valley (David Coffaro; I cannot offhand recollect the vintage).

I think the Zins that do the sharp, thin thing (acetone is the idea, but it isn't really acetone) are the ones that are rather overblown to start - the "big" Zins that, sadly to my taste, became so popular 10 or more years ago. Fortunately, not all Zins are like that.

David Coffaro tells one and all that he makes his wines for early drinking. Yet they seem to do fine for a decade or so, in my experience.
