WTN: Currant Event and a Rosé Burg

by Bill Buitenhuys » Mon May 29, 2006 8:19 pm

2001 Merryvale Starmont Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa, CA.
$22 I’m really starting to dislike strong red currant aromas and this wine has it at overpowering levels. The taste has some Cali earth mixed with lots of dark fruit, the finish has fine tannins and chocolately tones, but I can’t get past the currants.

2003 Domaine Digioia-Royer Bourgogne Rosé (Chambolle-Musigny)
$16 Joyously bright ruby red color that yells Spring. While the aroma is fairly subdued, the taste more than compensates with tart cherry and minerals. Lots of good acidity, soft but noticeable tannins and a crisp clean finish. A bit pricey for rosé but it’s a nice drink.

Red currant flavors in a Napa Cab? Lebanon yes, California no. What will they think of next?

Hopefully the red currant thang won't be a growing trend.

Would be interested in trying the Digioia-Royer rose'. I'm really sold on their 2002 Chambolle-Musignys.

I have to make it over to the local shop that carries the D-R burgs, JC. I'm interested in trying those now too!

And I had complained about the cost of the D-G rose' until I saw the latest Kermit Lynch catalog and the Domaine Gros 'Nore'f rose' is now up to $23! (Only a couple dollars less than Tempier).
