WTN: Muga 2006

by Bruce Hayes » Fri Jan 25, 2008 8:05 pm

DOC Rioja.
Bodegas Muga

A blend of Viura (90 per cent) and Malvasia.

Spicy, oaky and pear fruit on the nose.

Moderately weighty, very rich, pear and lemon fruit, toasty, spicy, very tangy, light oak, turing tart and drying toward the end.

A very mouthwatering finish.

The wine is quite rich and intense, but not cloying or heavy, thanks to the healthy dose of acidity. Much better with some time to warm up on tha table than it is straight from the fridge.

Purchased at $15.85 (Canadian) and an excellent value.

Can't find the 06 but I am going to pick up some of the 05 that is still around. Have you tasted that one? I do love Muga and never have a fear of buying. Wonderful producer.

Hi Jason.

I thought I had tasted the 05 Muga before (I have certainly purchased it before), but I can't find any WTN when I do a search. FWIW, the same Canadian wine critic who recommended the 2006, also liked the 2005, so you are probably pretty safe there. He said it is elegant, spicy, with nice pear fruit.
