WTN: Ruinart, de Sousa, Bonnezeaux, Lafon-Rochet, Girardin.

Blimey, title like that I feel like Florida Jim or Jay from Labrador!! All in good fun forumites.
Anyway this is the menu and wines consumed at a staff party for Devines wine store here in town, and as I co-host tastings, I am considered staff. Pretty good deal eh.
22 eager fun people met at the Hardware Grill, without a doubt the best restaurant in town. All wines were BYOB and there were two of each, except for the port.

For reception, there was a choice of two Champagnes. The Ruinart NV Brut did not show its usual self and was over-shadowed by a de Sousa NV Brut which had elegant mousse, and attractive fruit right through to the long finish. Not a name I am familiar with but very nice.

The first course was a choice of salad, either pepper crusted Ahi Tuna with wood smoked tomato vinaigrette or Grilled Polenta with forest mushrooms and a sage, port, gorgonzola cream sauce. As one can imagine, all plates were passed around so we all got to try everything throughout the evening!

The `06 Albarinho Paso de Senorans had a nice citrus, minerally nose with green apple. Bracing acidity, apple, grapefruit, pear and lemon on the palate. Shaped up nicely these past 5 months since last bottle. The Rully from Girardin, I have posted notes elsewhere here but amazing white Burgundy wine for under $40.
We also had a `03 White Hermitage from Cave de Tain. Went better with the food, honey tones, nectar, minerally. Lovely white but needs food to bring out the best, too sweet by itself.

**** The main courses and red wines we opened demand a tad more detail so will close for now and complete my story later this evening. Stay tuned for news of the Lafon Rochet, a Vigne de l`Enfant Jesus, Numanthia and a Fonseca Guimareans!!

OK part 2 is coming up now. I will list menu first and then go through some TNs from my notes and thoughts scribbled down by others at the dinner!

Menu.

Porcini crusted Sea Bass, Lobster-truffled Potato crepe, White Corn-Arugula & Gulf Prawns with warm Portobello vinaigrette.

Roasted Duck breast, Blue Potato, carrot, turnip, Duck Confit hash, Orange Gastrique.

Smoked loin of Lamb, Coffee-barley Risotto, Stuffed Portobello Cap, Chocolate-Balsamic Syrup.

Wines.

`96 Ch Lafon-Rochet had a little bit of bottle stink on opening I heard.
Sweet berries, plum, cigar box. Very smooth tannins, thought drinks nicely. Good with the lamb!

`05 Vigne de l`Enfant Jesus, Grand Vin de Beaune Greves, Bouchard.

Full-bodied, medium tannins, big finish. Floral, etheral nose, elegant. "Atypical" thought some. Wow wine for me, Burgundy drinkers here missed a treat!

`04 Numanthia, Toro.

Tempranillo on steroids! Huge tannins, red fruits, put away for sure. Not bad with my chocolate cake, better with duck! I drained the other two reds, not this one. It was served too warm, like some of the others, so that did not help.

For dessert, we had a bottle of the `97 Bonnezeaux from Rene Renou which went down nicely. Luscious, honeyed, finish tad short maybe without food but shined with my gingerbread cake....pears, melon, kiwi.
The port was the `76 Fonseca Guimaraens. Served too warm highlighted the alcohol here. Still lots of purple, needs time. Not enough to go around!

Re: de Souza -

Bob,

This is a highly regarded récoltant manipulant from Avize growing 7,6 hectares of Chardonnay and 3,4 hectares of Pinot Noir 77% and Pinot Meunier 23%.

Kudos to DeVines for showing the wines of such a small niche producer.

Thanks Tim, I really enjoyed this champers. Cost is under $60 Cdn.
DeVines brings in some exceptional wines and has a huge stock of everything!!!! No connection of course, except I shop there and help with tastings. LOL.

Yikes Bob! Numanthia is a hard wine to drink. The 'Big Brother' Termanthia even more so -much like tasting a purple shotgun blast.

Spot on Bill. These wines came from the store so guess owners wanted to see how these young pups were standing up!! The Numanthia needs 10 yrs eh...at least!
