Think I have already found a possible white WOTY!

At least it is going to show up there with a few others!!

WTN: `05 Rully 1er Cru Rabource, Vincent Girardin.

This was one of the whites tasted at a recent staff party, the food included appetisers of Ahi Tuna and Grilled polenta but I kept some for the sea-bass.

Quite rich and mouthfilling, kick a... chardonnay! Nose had nutty vanilla, cream, apple, spice, pear. On the palate so smooth, light and elegant. Long finish, some oak, not oily. Great mid-palate, am going to find some downtown. $38 Cdn.

Bob,
I have a love-hate relationship with Giradin Whites. I find many of his upper-end wines drink beautifully young, then go through a phase where the oak dominates and distracts. I recently had an '04 Corton Charlemagne which was gorgeous. An '02 of the same wine was an oak-bomb, although I had enjoyed it a couple of years ago. I suspect this is just their version of shutting down, and it will eventually re-emerge as a great wine.
The '05 Puligny Montrachet Vieilles Vignes (with a screwtop) is another beauty that can be found for a song. It's drinking great now, and probably has the stuffing to last several years. It's currently my "house" white.
Thanks for the note,
Warren

Thanks Warren, have no real experience with wines such as this, so value your opinion. Are you in-the-know with Vincents reds??

Interesting thing about Girardin. Perhaps for the same arc that was described by Warren (or perhaps because I'm a cheap SOB that keeps looking for bargains in Burgundy), I greatly favor the Girardins with the more humble designations. He's actually producing some pretty damned good commune-level reds for modest prices.

You might check out the 2005s that are out right now. Pretty tasty stuff at a $20-30 USD ring, actually. And if Warren is correct, then these will be all consumed before they start sagging and splintering with age and oak. :)

I'm another who has liked some of his "lesser" terroir wines more than bigger names. I've like Rullys, Santenay blanc, and even the Domaine St Vincent bourgogne more than some of the heavily oaked 1ers from Meursault, Chassagne, etc. Plus on reds he does well from Santenay, I think his home base.

At one point I heard he was not doing any more reds, but that seems to not be true.

Girardin reds

by David M. Bueker » Mon Jan 21, 2008 12:44 pm

Apparently Girardin is goign to be up and down with reds based on vintage. He made a whole bunch more 2005s than 2004s, and apparently will be back down close to zero red in 2006.

I've had a few of the 2005 village level wines from Girardin & been favorably impressed. Not great, but good value in this overheated Burg market.

Dale, you have warmed the cockles of my heart!!! Here in town, one can buy some Santenay as well as the Bourgogne Rouge. Will check back with what else is available for us punters here in AB.
