WTN: 2005 Sainte Croix Du Mont

by Sam Platt » Sat Jan 19, 2008 9:38 am

2005 Chateau des Graves du Tich
Sainte Croix Du Mont

Recommended by the wine shop salesman as I stared longingly at a 2000 Yquem.

Color: Light gold.

Nose: Strong nose of honey and citrus.

Taste: Silky mouth feel. Very nice, but lighter than the Sauternes. Initially lots of honey, brown sugar and apricot which gives way to some citrus fruit. The finish is a nice caramel that lingers of several minutes. There are some mineral notes hiding in the background as well. Enought heft in the wine that it should age nicely. A very tasty dessert wine coming in at 13.5% alcohol.

Lacks the complexity and vicosity of the better Sauternes I have tasted. But get this, the 750 ml bottle was $18! This wine is a steal at that price. From the wine atlas it appears the SCDM is just across the river from Yquem. For whatever reason I had never heard of the area before. Definitely worth checking out.

Sam,
Small world!! I was down at the local shoppe this morning suffering through a middling line up. A former colleague of mine who imports this wine showed up and opened a bottle for us to try. It was a big hit considering the price. As you mention, loads of honey, citrus (clementines) and that brown sugar thing going on. Reminds me a lot of Loupiac. A 750 ml at ~$18 is a steal, but a bottle this large could bring on a diabteic coma unless shared with about 10 friends.
I assume you purchased this down in my "neighborhood"?
I returned the favor by recommending a 2001 ESJ Wylie-Fenaughty accompany his comfort food pot roast dinner.

Bill,

Yes, we bought it down your way. Phillip, at 21st Amendment, suggested it to us. We also tasted it in the store. Is that where you picked up your bottle?

Sam,
I tasted at the same chain, different location. I figured this was where you got it since the wine has a fairly limited distribution.
Best,
Bill
