Schloss Gobelsburg Brut Reserve Sekt NV
Very Gruvee (70%) -the raw white pepper flavor saturates the environment upon popping the cork. Lemon and grapefruit flavors laced with sea-spray and sweaty Savennieres-esk wool and aloe. Biscuity, but in a very sourdough way. tight, focused attack and a crisp, crackly finish. Lovely stuff. 12% alc, $31

Schloss Gobelsburg 'Gobelsburger' Riesling 2006
Plenty of lime and Lemon fruit, mint leaf, peach skin, sage, salty, crushed mineral. It has some heft, but isn't flabby, more coiled and springy with more texture and tone than the price indicates. Seabiscuit!!! 12,5% Alc. $18

Not surprising that the 2006 showed above its class. Lots of 2006s do that.

Will have to look for the 2006 Riesling. I liked the 2005 but this sounds like it may be even better.

Make that 'x3':

2005 Gobelsberger "Renner": I had this wine over Christmas and loved it, and bought another bottle that I took to show friends who are big-fruit chardonnay fans and have probably never had a Gruner before. They're not cheapskates but they're quite risk-averse, and wouldn't risk the $30 this bottle costs on a wine they'd not tasted. They loved it. But this time out, I didn't. The color's quite yellow and the ripeness so overt it borders on tropical--so however good the wine was, and it was very good, I missed the precise intensity and green pea flavors I've come to love in the cooler year models.
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov

And this was the 2005? I found the Renner to be one of my two fave Gruner Veltliners in 2005. Your comments surprise me.

Yes, it was the 2005. I was surprised by my reaction too, entranced as I was by the last bottle. Almost made me wonder if this one was flawed in some way, but there were really no obvious problems. It was just...less refreshing. Or good, but. Or maybe all that sunny ripeness was something to lust after on a cold Northwest day, but oddly almost redundant on a warm sunny day in So Cal? Or maybe it was the temperature: the first bottle was refrigerator cold when I had it, where this one was closer to barely chilled (normally, not a negative).

My experiences with the '05 Renner are quite similar. I went through tons of it when it first arrived, but I felt it started showing more hot vintage aromatics as time went on. It never became disappointing for me; but it did take a turn for the worse IMO. I drunk all mine up, so I'll never know if it will take a turn for the better again.

I served our second (of three) bottles of the Renner night before last right out of the fridge and it was closed at first, but with air and help from a 70-degree room and time in the glass it began to sing. After the second half of the bottle spent a night in a 375 it was lovely. Wish I had more. Anybody have an opinion about how this may age?
