WTN: '00 Hirsch Alte Reben Riesling

Maybe I have been drinking too much red wine or maybe I forgot how good the most noble grape could taste but this wine was excellent. The first thing that hit was a beautiful nose that told you right off the wine was Riesling. The color was golden and combined with the bouquet made you want to taste. All the expected elements were there, petrol, nice acidity and somehow what seemed to be some sweetness but probably just fruit. This was a hefty wine with complexity and a full body. Everything was in balance. I tend to shy away from German rieslings due to lack of knowledge, really like Austria because of the drier tastes but have always been a little concerned about the higher alcohol. You can throw all of these concerns out-the-window with this wine as it was perfectly balanced and I would be happy to drink this anytime even though it may not be the most touted vintage. Went well with sauteed trout and nice dinner salad.

Out of curiosity, what was the alcohol?

Rahaan,
The alcohol was 13.0, pretty low for most wines but higher than a lot of old world Riesling.

Well, I don't know if I'd call that "low" (at least for the wines that I drink), but it does seem reasonable for a high-quality Austrian riesling.

Sounds great.
