WTN: 2002 Nigl Gruner Veltliner Alte Reben

by JC (NC) » Wed Jan 09, 2008 2:02 pm

Qualitatswein L/F 3631/03 Trocken 13.5 alcohol (as I recall)
I thought I had a 2000 vintage but it was the 2002.
Medium gold color. Honeyed pear nose. Fairly unctuous mouth presence. Palate coating. Balanced acids. Fruitiness with some pepper on the tip of the tongue. Viscous. Rich and tasty. Perhaps my favorite GV to date. Nice the first evening with artichoke heart salad and also with baked pork chop topped with Gorgonzola cheese and a side dish of wild rice with cremini mushrooms.
Tried it the second night with the Gorgonzola Piccante cheese by itself and thought it didn't match as well as a Sauvignon Blanc might. It did work with a baked artichoke appetizer and a baked crab and shrimp cake.

Yum!

One of my first great Grüner matches was with Asparagus soup. I can see where it would work well with the artichokes.

If it's green, go Grüner! Or any other color for that matter...
