[WTN] Federspiel Kollmuetz 2006 Gruner Veltliner

by MattThr » Tue Jan 08, 2008 5:40 pm

Bought out of curiosity (I'd tried neither Austrian wine nor this particular grape beforehand) and after recommendation by the retailer.

=====

Wine is pale yellow and smells pleasantly of apple and hazelnut.

Acid is spot on, being nicely refreshing on the palate without oozing over into sharpness. Quite strong fruit flavour of pear and pineapple at the start moving on into a much more astringent finish of bitter gooseberry and minerals.

Matt, Is this the Erich Machherndl Kollmütz Grüner Veltliner? Kollmütz is a vineyard in the Wachau town of Wösendorf (confusingly situated near the Kollmitz vineyard in Joching.) Machherndl makes use of both. If so, I haven't tried the '06 yet, but the '05 was nice.

Yes, it's from Erich Machherndl. I'm not familiar with the Austria region, so deciphering the label gave me a bit of a headache!

In your defense Matt, Machherndl doesn't make it easy. Just the weingut and a scripted 'M'.
