New year’s day, 3 friends, a couple of crib boards, a half kilo of foie gras, and of course some wine.

2005 Dom. de Fondreche ‘Persia’ Cote de Ventoux blanc – very pleasant honeysuckle nose, soft wine with good length and significant flavour interest in the middle. 100$ Roussanne.

With the FG:

2000 Ch. Vari Monbazillac - saffron nose (unusual) medium sweet, soft and smooth, not a bad match with the FG, which we served traditionally, seared, with coarse salt on top (none of those sissified fruit sauces for serious FG hounds!)

1996 Ch. Doisy Daene – this Barsac showed beautifully and was voted best with FG by all. Ambering colour, not too sweet but with honey in the nose, good flavour intensity, good length, medium weight and concentration.

With a nice spaghetti and meat sauce:

1998 Michele Satta Cavaliere – a 100% Sangiovese IGT, this was fairly dark, excellent nose of soya, coffee beans and earth. Good varietal flavours with very good concentration and good length.

1999 Dom. Pegau Cuve Reservee CNduP – leather and fruit in the nose, the wine a bit tight on palate, needing more time but showing some good spicy fruit now.

2000 Dom. de la Solitude CNduP – spicy fruit, medium body, little tannin and that pretty soft, this drinks well now thought it has some time yet.
