WTN: Bachelet Bourgogne, Anne Amie PG

by Dale Williams » Thu Jan 03, 2008 5:10 pm

New Years Day was mostly just kicking back, a few chores around the house, but mostly enjoying first day I hadn't worked in 3 or 4 weeks. I made some blackeyed peas (store was out of ham hocks, so made do with smoked neck bones!), Betsy prepared duck legs, kale, and a salad. Wine was the 2002 Denis Bachelet Bourgogne. A little tight at first, but really blossomed with about an hour of air. Moderate tannins, good acidity, lively floral nose. Rich ripe fruit, black cherry with a nice bitter edge, a bit of beet, sweet fruit but with that lovely bitter tone and good acidity. Very nice for a regional wine. Day two the bitter edge was gone, but still rich cherry fruit, with waves of damp earth. I only have a couple left, going to try and keep hands off for a couple years. B++

In-laws arrived yesterday for a visit, Betsy made a capon with lemon and thyme, brown rice, spinach, and carrots. I find capon pretty versatile, but with the lemon thought white. Opened the 2006 Anne Amie Pinot Gris (Oregon). First of all, I should note that rest of table loved it. I was more in the like than love category. The positive aspects were a distinct PG spiciness, sweet pear fruit, a little mineral note. The part that kept me from being thrilled was the sweetness was enough to make me think real RS. I thought at one early point I got a little oaky vanilla, but that faded, just my imagination. Gets a little citric edge with time. I would have preferred a little more austere, but this is a nice Oregon PG for those that like Zind-Humbrecht's style, say. B

(edited to show this is Denis Bachelet, as I forgot there is a Bernard Bachelet also)

Grade disclaimer: I'm a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C mediocre. Anything below C means I wouldn't drink at a party where it was only choice. Furthermore, I offer no promises of objectivity, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency

Hi Dale,

Have you had good luck opening your 2002 Burgs lately? I've had a couple that seemed to be closed recently.

I haven't tried the Ann Amie PG, but did enjoy a Riesling from them last summer. I think it was supposed to come from older vines or something. I guess "old" here is relative to Oregon. It was one of the highlights of a day tasting in Carleton, along with the Belle Pente Pinot Noirs. Anyway, it is probably worth trying if you see it.

Best,
Marc

Dale,

Did you receive official permission to post a note about Bachelet? You know Bachelet notes are fiercely controlled by the Bachelet control center in D.C.

I have really enjoyed the 2002 Bachelet lower level wines. A bottles of his Cotes de Nuits Villages was delicious early this summer.

My limited experience has been that the more "serious" wines are really tight, but I've had good luck with Bourgognes and things like the Drouhin Chorey and maybe some Cote Chalonnaise wines.

Dale - have you tried Bachelet's Bourgogne from 2005? I'm thinking of opening one, but I'm concerned that the 2005s are shut down, or at the very least, holding back. I had a 2005 Truchot Gevrey Chambertin that was glorious, but a Bouchard Savigny Les Beaune that wasn't quite as pretty as I hoped. So, any word on 2005 Bachelet?

Bachelet is a top-shelf producer. I'm not surprised to hear the even his Bourgogne Rouge still needs time.

Diane, I looked for Denis Bachelet's Bourgogne in 2005, but it kept being over $30. So didn't buy. Will be interested if you try.

I ended up going for the 2005 Contes de Nuits Villages, as it was only a small upcharge over the Bourgogne.

Dale - I purchased a few bottles last month at Post on Long Island for $28.95. It's still priced high for a Bourgogne, but I was happy to see it available for under $30. I also have a couple of Groffier and a few Marechale. The only 2005 Bourgogne I've tried was the Marechale a few months ago. It was tight and dusty, but with a nice burst of cherries. I've enjoyed all of the 2005s village Burgs that I've tried.
I'll post a note when I try the Bachelet.
Diane
