Question: What is the written plural of Pinot Gris?

by Sue Courtney » Wed Jan 02, 2008 6:18 pm

When I am talking about one Pinot Gris wine, I pronounce it as Pinot Gree.

When I am talking about more than one, I pronounce the plural version as Pinot Greeze, but how do I write it?

You have challenged the inner linguist in me, Sue.

I would venture to say that the pronunciation for both is the same, i.e. pee-noh gree.

Even if you add a pluralizing "s," the French pronunciation would not change "des pinot gris" is pronounced the same as "des pinots gris." Ditto for "pinot blanc" and "pinot noir."

Out of curiosity I searched French only websites for the competing plural forms "des pinot gris" and "des pinots gris" and found both forms being used fairly equally, although I didn't put in a phone call to the Académie française to check which form is official.
And now what?

Gary; I'm guessing that des Pinot Gris is technically not correct because Pinot has not been pluralized. Think des Pinots Gris is right.

To say that you have plural Pinot Gris is shorthand (or implied or slang--I don't know the grammatical term) for having two or more something (usually bottle) of Pinot Gris.

So in English, I would think two Pinot Gris is correct and in French I'd stick with les bouteilles du Pinot Gris; n'est-ce pas?

If you could get your hands on a bottle of St Innocent 2005 Shea Vineyard Pinot Gris you wouldn't have to struggle at atll.

It really depends on the context, but Steve is essentially correct in his suggestion.

You can, for instance, have different clones of pinot gris and hence have different pinots or des pinots gris and, by extension des pinots noirs and des pinots blancs. You can find this usage on some of the French viticultural websites. For instance, this little excerpt from the Association technique viticole de Bourgogne: En grand crus, les nouvelles sélections de pinots noirs fins présentent de très bons atouts. Les pinots moyens et les clones certifiés actuels, excellents s'ils sont bien maîtrisés, mèneront très fréquemment à avoir à faire des vendanges en vert. Des pinots noirs très fins peuvent bien sûr être utilisés pour une concentration et une richesse des vins supérieures, en prenant garde toutefois aux rendements très modérés, proche du rendement de base en grand cru lorsque la vigne est jeune.

But even this website, where you'd think they'd know better, swings both ways on closer inspection.

As to your bottle, une bouteille de pinot gris is a bottle of pinot gris whereas une bouteille du pinot gris is a bottle of pinot gris as opposed to, say, a bottle of pinot blanc which the waiter just suggested. That stinking de in French is the death of many an American. Used to show possession, used to show a partitive plural, used as a preposition, it can be a bear to sort out for 'Muricans ... except maybe for Randy and Rahsaan.

OK, Sue, what's the written plural of Szürkebarát?
And now what?

De/du is a struggle no doubt. The other flip-flop that drives me crazy is c'est vs il est in different constructions.

Personally I'd say the English plural is Pinot Gris, pronounced Pinot Greeze.

What the French do is up to them. We rarely use foreign plural endings on loan words. The only examples I can think of off the top of my head are for Latin and Greek words and some Italian foodstuffs - and we often get those wrong too :)

The plural of Pinot Gris is Pinot Gris.

The French text referring to "les Pinots Noirs" is incorrect IMHO.

If the grape variety wera a singular, I think either with or without an "s" would be fine for the plural.
Example: les sémillions sont mûrs / le sémillon est mûr

But the compound name changes everything.

Best regards,
Alex R.
