WTN: 1945 Suduiraut, 1985 Montelena

Our yearly Christmas dinner with the brother in law, et al - The Chateau Montelena - Pretty purple color, clear rim! no bricking, bouquet and palate old cigar box, this was decanted for 2 hours and still seemed young. Soft tannins, great balance, great acdidity - amazing 22 year old cali cab - may not get a lot better but still has plenty of life ahead. I have a botttle of 1987 left out of a trio of 1985 - 86 - 87. The 85 and 86 have been amazing.

Ch. Suduiraut 1945 - We bought this as a birth year wine for my brother in law 2 years ago and just got around to opening one now.
Color was dark amber
Nose was honey and orange
Palate was honey, orange peel, much apricot, preserved lemons caramel, great balancing acidity. Finish went on and on and on. Amazing wine and to think that it may have been grown/vinified during Vichy France. Amazing bit of history. He still has one bottle left too.

Great stuff. Thanks for the notes. I loved 85-87 for Montelena ... well I generally love them but that trio made me a bit of a fanatic.

If California were to adopt a growth classification like Bordeaux's, Chateau Montelena would have to be a First and I must jealously offer that you've just named all the reasons why. I have some early 90's bottles that I'm waiting to catch up with where your 85 was.

What's really astonishing is that you can buy current release for about $100. That' s not cheap but 1st growth French Bordeaux????

Shhhhhhhhhh.

Since Wine Spec. gave 01 and 02 IIRC 69 points ... you can get those real cheap ... and they rock!

I loved the days when it was very easy to get them on futures for 50% of release price. That's how I got most of my 90s versions ... now I only pick a bottle here and there ... since $100 is getting out of my range ... but agreed .. that is still a bargain for what is in the bottle.

Thanks for the heads up - I'm looking those up right now!
