2006 Jean-Paul Thévenet Morgon VV
High toned, “floral”, and shows some of the infamous brett. But not so much that I am disturbed (and I consider myself relatively sensitive) or distracted from the light feather red fruit that floats very well and very easily across the palate. Definitely fun. That said, I wonder if the brett is clipping and limiting the pure succulence, and it probably was my least favorite of these three. Might like to see it with a bit more age, but considering all my other options, probably wouldn’t repurchase.
2006 Jean Foillard Morgon Côte du Py
This is what I like. Pure fruit silk from the opening. Nowhere near as robust or thick as the 05 and none of the sappy stones I have found in previous vintages of the wine (am thinking 02 and 05). But, has plenty that I love, threads of crushed powdered ethereal cherries, that delicate sherbet-y element I associate with Foillard. The nose! The fragrance! The texture! Motivational wine in that special Beaujolais way. Drinks well now but can’t wait to keep drinking this in the future.
2005 Marcel Lapierre Morgon
The funk is evident upon opening, but so is the silky fruit, and after several hours of air this shows very well. Round and juicy, but showing many sides with sappy silk, interior tannins, spice, bass notes, and a graphite spine. This is my first taste of the 05 Lapierre, so I can’t compare it to a year ago, but I can only assume that it has slimmed/calmed since release and it was a very nice drink for me. The most impressive of these three, although perhaps the extra year of age has more to do with that than any overall quality judgement.
