WTN: Willi Schaefer and Gilbert Picq

by Dale Williams » Fri Dec 21, 2007 5:10 pm

Wednesday Betsy made scallops with a basil butter, plus roasted sweet potatoes with caramelized shallots, and crispy kale (this is Eden's recipe, which Traci justed reposted Jenise's reposting of- see FLDG, great stuff). Wine was the 2005 Gilbert Picq Chablis from a half-bottle. Typical and satisfying, if unexceptional. Ripe apple fruit, a little wet rock note, maybe just a tad less zippy/steely than my desire. B

Thursday she went off in a Mexican-accented direction, with a "lasagna" of tortillas, ricotta, chipotles, and guacamole, plus some cheese quesdillas. I mostly stuck to seltzer (having fun with new siphon), but also sipped on the 2002 Willi Schaefer Wehlener Sonnenuhr Kabinett (Mosel Saar Ruwer). Beautifully light Mosel, light sweetness, ethereal body, yet with some length on finish. White pit fruit and lime juice, very light, 8% abv which is a good thing because by end of evening it was history. B+

Grade disclaimer: I'm a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C mediocre. Anything below C means I wouldn't drink at a party where it was only choice. Furthermore, I offer no promises of objectivity, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency

That pretty much says for me with Picq, I've always expected a bit more than I got.

I so regret not buying more of Willi juice in '01 and '02, and I did buy quite a bit. Incredible wines and what are now bargains we won't see again any time soon.

on picq, i usually like the VV or the Dessus la Carriere fairly well; but in '05 they all seem to have an overly lactic finish. i may get to taste the '06's this week and they should be better.
