WTN: 2005 Pey Marin Pinot Noir Trois Filles

by Jason Hagen » Wed Dec 19, 2007 12:03 pm

  • 2005 Pey Marin Pinot Noir Trois Filles - USA, California, San Francisco Bay, Marin County (12/17/2007)
I have now tried this twice. The second time was with my friend Dietz out of some really crappy wine glasses ... and slightly warmer than preferred temperature. I loved it all the same. After 3 vintages, this wine has become one of my favorites. The 05 is a step up from the 04 ... maybe in large part do to the vintage. This first time I tasted the wine, it was in the midst of a bunch of pinots. The aromatics really separated this wine. Loads of spice and fruit. Expansive and complex dark fruits across the palate. On the second tasting, with the small glasses, I was harder to distinguish the aromatics ... it just smelled good. On the palate I noticed more citrus and red fruit then at the previous tasting. All this to say, I love the wine and look forward to opening another next year. It would be hard for me to imagine someone disliking this wine.

Cheers,

Jason

I've liked it both times I've tried it, too.. even, as you say, despite it being warmer than it should have been. For me, it's in that Williams-Selyem, Swan style with lower alcohol, lighter mouthfeel and a nice line of acidity that makes it refreshing and easy to drink. Good stuff.

I think I have one more bottle, no??

You do have 1 more bottle. Certainly a lighter style but still lots of fruit. I think Marin county adds some uniqueness too.

I didn't mean to imply that it was lean on fruit.. not at all.. very bright red fruit... just that it was well-balanced with the acidity and a lightness in the mouth that made it really attractive.

By comparison, last night we had a 2004 Joseph Drouhin Chorey-les-Beaune that was lean on fruit....and 12.8% alc.... which might explain that lean streak. If I remember correctly the Pey-Marin was 13.8%, but the fruit was ripe and clean... I would drink the P-M over that particular Drouhin any day.

I loved this wine and still have another bottle, too. Wouldn't call it light--it had big fruit and plenty of body, it just had good acidity. What I loved most about it though was it's unique flavor--just when we thought we'd tasted it all in terms of pinot noir, here comes a wine from a new place with a whole new set of pinot flavors that suggests that we've hardly exhausted all the possibilities.

Drat...I just picked up a bottle of that Drouhin upon a recommendation at K&L.

Still...as my liking for the Hofsatter Pinot Nero proves, I am not real big on Pinot fruit forwardness. I like the lean-ness. :P

I did like Peay-Marin, though. I am going to try a Kendrick Marin County Pinot with the ham.

Brian...it's not a bad wine, really. Just not very inspiring. I'd be interested in your take when you do try it.

Good good good! I have the 2005 vintage! :P .

Still only 13%, though

Remember this is "Pey" - Marin ... not to be confused with Peay.

Not that it matters, but the 2005 got a biggish number (92) from a critic to be unnamed...

I keep making this mistake.

I actually picked up a bottle of Peay Syrah. It sounded intriguing.

All the Peay wines I have tasted have been very nice. I own a few ... and have wanted to buy more but I have restricted myself from adding another producer to me list.

So true. I am always looking for vineyards and locales that produce wines that have something unique.
