Is this just too geeky, handy as it may be?

I'm torn, but at two for $25.00 I'm sorely tempted. Has anyone tried one of these? (I'm always fumbling around trying to write notes at standup tastings. :( )

'Fraid not, Jim. But you can get a pack of 100 18" straws for $3.95.

"Luau Straws", in the trade, I'm told. :)

If the ladies don't fall for the bluetooth earpiece, pocket organizer or x-ray glasses they'll surely be taken by the well equipped stud-muffin donning this beauty.

A few years back at an event called Great Tastes of Pennsylvania at Split rock Resorts, upon admission you were given a complimentary wine glass and a similar device shown in Bob’s picture. At such an outdoor event where there is an assortment of entertainment and activities (especially eating) to enjoy, such a device comes in handy (it definitely frees your hands). You never have to worry about misplacing your wine glass it’s cradled in its holder around your neck.

Every year at the Boston Wine Expo, I see dozens of people with these. It might be the same people every year, as you do sort of notice the geek-level!

Pretty cool, Bob.

But I liked the Codpiece design variation myself.

With this design, certain people would *ahem* have a difficult time keeping their wineglass from tipping at an precarious angle.

You know....Barlettano, Garr, maybe a couple of others I could think of.

When I was in Montepulciano for the big Wine to the Stars event, where we walked around town tasting various wines at various booths, we were given something like this to wear. My man "boobs" did not create any accidents, but I did find myself holding the glass more often than hanging it on my manly man chest.

Different angle of repose, I think.

I agree with Hoke, the molded plastic clip design doesn’t allow for adjustment. At least the codpiece or pouch sling design allows one to make adjustments. Besides their probably a lot cheaper, heck that year I went to Split Rock, they were giving them away.

There's no way I'm wearing one of those things -I'd rather don a 'Beer-Hat' complete with staws. Part of the joy of stand-up wine tasting is the awkward grip of the notebook and glass-stem foot between the thumb and first two fingers while writing with the other hand-plus the bonus purple stains and illegible ink blotches on the paper recall fond memories of far away places.

Bob, As they say, if you have to ask ...

Yes, this is incredibly geeky. Please don't.

Hey, looks like my body is sneaking out at night to advertise wine glass holders!

In all seriousness, they can be useful, but that's the dorkiest I've ever seen. If us wine geeks think it's too geeky, well, you might as well be wearing the beer hat as far as normal folks are concerned.

What I want is a small clipboard with a notepad and a round slot to hold a glass.

Hey, that's a great idea. I'll going to cut one out of a piece of nice finished plywood, using a jigsaw. Sand down the edges.

Maybe make two holes so I can let particularly nice example to age a bit, or maybe for whites and reds.

Thanks, Walt. :)

I was at a Prosecco tasting a couple of months ago where one winery was giving away something which did the same -- basically it was a small canvas pouch you hung around you neck and put your glass in. Very simple and cheap (to make, they gave them away) -- and you would not believe how damn useful it was.

Need to take a note - slip your glass in the pouch. Need to go to the loo -- ditto.

Very useful, it freed one hand (which is 50% of them)

The example you show looks over engineered and thus over expensive, but the concept is great and works well.

Thanks, Peter -- I'll see if I can find a simple version or even make one or two -- it shouldn't be too hard to make out of a thin canvas.

In the meantime, I'll give the plywood wine tasting tablet a whirl as well.

Although I'm better on a sewing machine than with a jigsaw ... hmm, decisions, decisions. :)

We're about halfway there: we've got small plates with a slot in them in which one can place the stem of one's wine glass to hold it, thereby freeing up one hand (for note taking or whatever). If you want to really make the note-taking easier, get a PDA with voice recognition software and a "hands-free" mike. People might look askance at you as you wander about a tasting talking volubly to no one in particular, but that's a small price to pay for such a user-friendly system, no?

I've tried the PDA approach, Mark, but it doesn't work for me.

I learn by writing -- been true for over 50 years -- somehow the physical note taking imprints my memory. I'm amazed sometimes when I look at my notes that they'll communicate anything at all.

But once I sit down at the keyboard, and read them against the name, vintage, etc., the memory of the wine comes back with real clarity.

Another advantage of the physical notes is that if the sponsors put out written descriptions, I can jot my notes next to the descriptions, re-enforcing the memories even more.

Jenise, you and I can just wear an undergarment that day that gives more... separation, and it can just nestle right in. 8)

To me it looks like the worst of both worlds--geeky AND impractical.

How about also wearing one of those Jack in the Box antennas stuck on your forehead. From time to time you could pull Jack's head down and give him a drink.
