Greg Hollis' post got me craving some veal schnitzel and warm potato/cucumber/bacon salad so we prepared it yesterday and served it with an '04 Donnhoff Oberhauser Brucke Spatlese . Actually, we started on it while cooking. It's not quite the wispy Donnhoff at it's best for me but pretty darn close. Mostly apples and peaches and beautifully balanced, hold if you can. Seeing that this wasn't going to make it through dinner I pulled an '01 Selbach-Oster Wehlener Sonnenhur Spatlese. I managed to get a nice stash of this but haven't tasted one in quite a while. It's picked up the diesel notes but not their not overpowering. It has lost any crisp steeliness it had put on some weight but manages to maintain that '01 focus and precision. Definitely hold if you can. Tonight with a tuna casserole I opened an '05 Domaine Billard Pere et Fils Bourgogne Hautes-Cotes de Beaune. What a fun wine, this couldn't have cost me more than $15 and has and earth and dried dark fruit taste that's just perfect with the food. A wonderful wine that should shine over the next few years.
