New to Wine and WineLovers

by Chris Lawson » Fri Dec 14, 2007 7:52 pm

Hello All, I am very excited about becoming part of WineLovers. I am located in Louisville, Ky and was wondering if anyone out there knows of any local wine clubs or any local people who may get together and discuss and taste wine? I am very interested in learning all about wine and how to properly buy it and take care of it at home. I am not lucky enough to have a cellar but have a small twelve bottle wine fridge at home. I am hoping to get a bigger wine fridge in the near future, any tips on wine fridge's would be much appreciated. Thanks again and I look forward to learning from everyone.

Welcome to the forum, Chris!

There are a lot of folks here from your general neck of the woods, including the one and only Robin Garr, our genial host and friend. I'm sure they'll have some insight into the local goings-on.

This is a great place with great people, friendly and knowledgeable. I'm sure you'll like it here!

Welcome, Chris.

I think some one posts wine storage unit inquiries on this forum every several months. Try playing with the search feature and see what pops up.

I purchased a VinoTemp economy unit with ~550 bottle capacity about 8 years ago. My only issue with it is the relatively small number of slots for oversized bottles used with sparkling wine and pinot noir.

Welcome, Chris. You are certainly near the font of wine knowledge in the person of our host here, and the rest of us are more than willing to chime in with additional details from time to time.

Welcome. Regards, Bob

Thanks everybody and yes I am really looking forward to meeting Robin someday and hopefully learning all that I can. I really hope I can find some local people who get together on a regular basis and do some tastings. Thanks again.

Chris, let me ad my welcome to the bandwagon. Good to have you here. I'm surprised Robin hasn't joined in. He must be out at a local establishment.

Hey, Chris, it's nice to meet you! (Waving at you from Crescent Hill.) Sorry I wasn't around last night when you landed.

Are you new to Louisville or a long-time resident? As you likely already know, this is a surprisingly good restaurant town for a city our size, and the wine scene is fairly decent. I still get a little jealous of some of the rare bottles our buddies in NYC and Boston pick off, but our local selection is good enough to provide about 95 percent of the wines I review.

For a quick overview of most of the metro's better wine-geek shops, take a look at this article on my Louisville food and dining Website:
http://www.louisvillehotbytes.com/wineshops.shtml

Of those, my regular stops are mostly Old Town, The Wine Market and Gemelli for knowledgeable staff and interesting wine-geek wines; Liquor Barn/Springhurst for its large variety, and The Wine Rack on Frankfort when I need something for dinner, because it's two blocks from my house. ;)

Anyway, for starters, check out all those places for scheduled wine tasting events. Most of them do tastings weekly or at least monthly, and it's a great way to get to sample some wines, meet the proprietors, ask questions and maybe make connections to informal tasting groups.

Frankly, because most of my wine socializing is done online, I don't belong to (or know of) any organized wine-tasting groups locally. I do get together informally with wine buddies from time to time, and one easy way for you to get into that would be to register also in our LouisvilleHotBytes.com forum, which is like this one but composed of "foodies" and "winoes" in the Louisville area. Our participants often get together for dinners - this week alone we had two gatherings, one at the new Seviche on Goose Creek Road, the other at the brand-new Corbett's An American Place in Brownsboro Crossing, which is going to be awesome.

To join the Louisville forum, hit
http://www.wineloverspage.com/forum/hotbytes

It's the same concept as this forum, but administered separately, so you'll have to register again.

We'll look forward to talking with you about food and wine on both forums!

Hey Robin thanks for all the tips and it sure is great to have someone of your knowledge here in the Louisville area. My wife and I just moved back to Louisville after spending ten years in Los Angeles. In that time my wife had taken me to Paso Robles, Edna Valley, San Luis Obispo and Santa Ynez for wine tasting trips, been in love with it ever since. I just recently attended a class with Scott at the Bristol downtown which was great. This is a great forum and hopefully we will get to meet many people on here over a good class of wine. Thanks again.

Welcome, Chris, from a fellow Louisvillian!

But I'm waving from New Mexico b/c I'm temporarily separated from my home state. Not for long, I head back in January for good--I, too, am very excited to start getting a good look at the local wine and restaurant scene that Robin speaks of. I always took all that for granted while I was there. :x

Anywho, I don't spend much time on here anymore, but the interaction I've had has been pleasant and helpful. See ya 'round!

Hi Chris,

Welcome to this and the other forums made possible by Robin, I live in Lexington, and found this place in the early (mid 90's) years. I am certain that you will enjoy the knowledge and camaraderie you will find here. I have been into wine as a consumer for nearly 40 years, and I still find something new here nearly daily. Again welcome to the group.
