WTN:05 Ridge York Creek Zin, 05 Christoffel Kabinett & Prince's Hot Chicken

by Jason Hagen » Thu Dec 13, 2007 4:07 pm

NASVHILLE TRIP - (12/9/2007-12/12/2007)

Just some quick impressions of 2 purchased wines on my recent trip.
  • 2005 Ridge Zinfandel York Creek - USA, California, Napa Valley, Spring Mountain District (12/10/2007)
Had at Watermark in Nashville. Nice balanced wine. Not too ripe. Lots of fruit and medium high acidity. Drinks well now but seems I imagine it will age just fine. (88 pts.)
  • 2005 Joh. Jos. Christoffel Erben Ürziger Würzgarten Riesling Kabinett - Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer (12/11/2007)
Decided I need a little wine with a very difficult pairing. Prince's Hot Chicken in Nashville. Well not really a pairing but it was the wine of the evening. The wine did need a bit of a shake to wake up ... then it was clean a fruity. Nicely balanced acidity with the sweetness. Lots of citrus but a touch of stones coming through as well. A solid wine. (89 pts.)

I have included this somewhat scary picture of my meal.

That is the Hot if you are wondering. That first bite is so intense. Major endorphin rush.

Cheers,

I opened this up more curious about what Prince's Hot Chicken was than the wines. You did not disappoint--that stuff looks mean.

Watched the video...so Prince's is a local institution! I love places like that. So which level did you choose?

I had the Hot for the second time. This time it seemed even hotter. I think I am going to step down to Medium next time ... give my body a break

A wing joint we used to go to in Alaska named their top level Thermonuclear. I tasted exactly one, then went back to whatever my beloved middle level heat one was named, which was unreliably too mild or too hot from one time to the next. Prince's probably has the same trouble since the source peppers are also variable. But perhaps that builds in a certain sense of anticipation that becomes part of the experience--a bit like corks. :)

I also liked the ÜrzWürz Christoffel '05, but I think I preferred their Erdener Treppchen Kab in '05 as it was brighter, more focussed and more towards a Kabinett style (I think most Kabs this year tasted more like Spätleses+).
