WTN: '06 Wiemer Semi-Dry Riesling

by Carl Eppig » Tue Dec 04, 2007 10:37 am

2006 Hermann J. Wiemer, Semi-Dry, Finger Lakes, Riesling ($18 U.S.). Alcohol level: 12.1%. It’s one of the last wines that Hermann had a hand in before selling the winery this year. There was no R.S. on the label, but it seems dryer than normal in this vintage. It is now more like an MSR Spatlese than one from the Rheingau. This was verified by the super taster I’m married to.

It is still both a very good example of a Finger Lakes Riesling and very Germanic one. It gives citrus, apple, and pear on the nose and upfront. There is a concentration of the fruits in the complexity on the palate, and a wonderfully lingering finish for a white wine.

We matched it with more turkey, stuffing, and gravy from Thanksgiving and green peas. It was a very nice Monday night.

Carl,
The 2006 Dry Riesling from Hermann Wiemer is also excellent.

Stopped by the Wiemer tasting room back in November and thought the '06 Semi-dry was the best of the rieslings on offer (except for the TBA). Much nicer balance than a pricier Reserve bottling (lacked acidity) and a bit more going on than the dry. The wine I was most impressed with was the '06 gewurztraminer, which has a lovely nose that jumps out of the glass. Nice linup overall; even the somewhat Germanic Pinot Noir is improving.

The woman in the tasting room said that Hermann will still be around in an advisory capacity; the guy taking over has been the winemaker for awhile now.

Thanks everyone for the notes. I've only had the dry Riesling from Wiemer in 2006, and thought it was very good. I'll have to try the semi-dry and Gewurztraminer.
