WTN: Wines with Wade (Champ, Cab Franc, Trevallon, Puglia)

Once again WadeH was visiting Finland, so I made a risotto of black trumpet mushrooms and we shared a few nice wines:

  • N.V. Voirin-Jumel Champagne Rosé - France, Champagne (12/1/2007)
Light pink. A very attractive nose of Pinosity: ripe red fruit and bisquits. The palate is a bit soft (could it have been based on the 2003 vintage?) with lots and lots of fruit, but it does stay refreshing enough. Nice, but I wouldn't have minded a little bit more acid.
  • 1999 Domaine de Trevallon Vin de Pays des Bouches-du-Rhône - France, Provence, Vin de Pays des Bouches-du-Rhône (12/1/2007)
A very personal and rather interesting nose of mulberry, vegetation, Cabernet lift and darker Syrah undertones. The palate is light on its feet, ripely tannic, refreshingly acidic, well balanced - very young but promising.
  • 2000 Charles Joguet Chinon Clos de la Dioterie - France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Chinon (12/1/2007)
Very nice at first with a good dose of herbs, tobacco, green fruit. Well structured palate - a polished style of Chinon. With time it became sweeter and a perhaps a bit too polished. But it was still charming.
  • 2001 Cooperativa Agricola Santa Barbara Barbaglio Salento IGT - Italy, Puglia, Salento IGT (12/1/2007)
Sweet, slightly funky fruit, earthy, lifted, red toned - very characterful. Good grip, good fruit, good length - very charming wine for those of us who like a funkier style.
  • 2005 Perusini ronchi di Gramogliano Colli Orientali del Friuli - Italy, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Colli Orientali del Friuli (12/1/2007)
Leafy, cigar-like, juicily fruity, very primary but a very true example of the grape. Juicy, charmingly structured, refreshing and long. A very lovable wine - but primary.
