Morellino di Scansano goes DOCG

by Paulo in Philly » Thu Nov 29, 2007 2:39 pm

This may be old news to some but I just read that Morellino di Scansano will enjoy the DOCG status as of the 2007 vintage, according to Wine Report 2008 of Tom Stevenson. Will prices sky rocket, in addition to the dollar weakening by the second?

This pisses me off.

Fortunately a few bizarre DOCG decisions in the past seem to have taken the 'gloss' off what ought to be a badge of highest quality. I'm guessing a bit of extra publicity, but no real impact on price - perhaps on the flip side it might even encourage more producers there to think of upping quality in anticipation of better prices... oh god what have I just said - in sweep the flying oenologists and hey presto spoofulated wine - I take back what I said

I'm inclined to agree with Ian--at least what he said in his first sentence and a half. Remember, even base-level Chianti (not Classico or one of the other sub-zones) is DOCG, but no one puts it on the same level, price- or otherwise, as, say, Vino Nobile.
