"How the Grinch Stole Christmas" runs on ABC at 8:30 EST. I should be able to make it by 9:30 if I get the trash out. The recycling is piled up though. We have had no recycling pick-up for two weeks!

Diving in,
however might need to multi-task - too much stuff to do before departing.
Cheers,

Well, first time I ever participated in that forum. Despite the software problems I was having (entirely on my side, I'm sure), it was entertaining, if at times bewildering.

It was fun to talk to y'all in real time for a while.

Sorry, never having been before, I didn't realize that wine talk was a taboo subject in the WLDG chat room. I'll try to have better manners next time.

Wine-talk is NOT taboo. We are just often an eccentric bunch, talking about whatever interests us. Quite frankly, we talk about wine frequently, just not as frequently as you might expect for a wine chat. We may be crazy, but we're not anal.

I gave up about trying to discuss wine during chat. Yeah, we make a big deal about saying hello to everyone who stops by. Then when everyone leaves, there is this quaint custom about counting from 10 backwards (sobriety test?). Leaves little time for much else, besides yanking a leg or two. It is usually fun, but don't expect much in the way of wine chat.

Ah, I wondered what the countdown was all about.

It's always interesting being a newbie in a group that has developed odd traditions that aren't obvious or comprehensible to the newcomer.

I apparently committed a faux pas by including 0 in my count. Hey, I program in C for a living, what can I say? [0] is a valid subscript. 8)

The countdown happens so people get a chance to say goodbye when others leave. One of the guys started it as a joke because I never managed to say bye to anyone before they exited. But it's still mainly a joke... nobody will be banned for skipping it!

As to conversation topics... anyone can start anything at anytime, and if others are interested it will be picked up. (Also, anyone is free to post a note that they will host a concentrated wine-only chat at a specified time, perhaps even with a narrowly defined topic. The room is always available, 24/7. Impromptu chats work too.)

The conversation definitely ebbs and flows, touching on nearly any subject one could name at one point or another, including wine and food. In a community with such diverse personalities and interests, it's been amply demonstrated to me that the regular chats serve a definite social purpose, allowing folks to interact and get to know one another in real time, no matter the topic.

I guess from my viewpoint, the bottom line is that the room is pretty well self-moderating, and I have no interest in trying to control civil conversations among adults.
