WTN: I love cork...NOT! (4 German Wines)

by David M. Bueker » Mon Nov 26, 2007 8:52 pm

Finishing up the Thanksgiving leftovers (well, less the turkey broth which is in the freezer).

2001 St. Urbans-Hof Riesling QbA
Corked.

2001 Hexamer Meddersheimer Rheingrafenberg Riesling Spatlese
CORKED!

2001 Karlsmuhle Lorenzhofer Riesling Spatlese
CORKED!!! Potentially the most disgustingly corked bottle I have ever smelled. This one was nasty!

Ugh...I've got to break this streak.

2001 J.u.H.A. Strub Niersteiner Paterberg Riesling Spatlese***
Ok, so this one is a bit closed, but it's not corked!!! Yay!!! Not much on the nose, but on the palate it's delicious, with lots of tropical fruit and earthy stones, balanced by fine acidity. There's also still that expansiveness on the back end of the palate that I loved when the 2001s were first released. This is really yummy, and a reminder that there were some fantastic wines made outside the Mosel in 2001. Just give it 2-4 more years to open up.
