Slump Buster--ESJ

by Redwinger » Sun Nov 25, 2007 9:35 am

For the last few weeks or so I've been in a wine slump...nothing tasted has really excited me. No really terrible wines, but nothing that made me want to back up the truck. So last evening, I decided to open one of my "go to"wines and am happy to announce the slump is over. The 2001 Edmunds St John Wylie Fenaughty Syrah was stunning after a 3 hour decant. By far my best bottle yet. There have been numerous notes written here about this wine so no need to get repetitious. I bought a bunch, but need to go back and refill the truck. Why this stuff isn't sold out at the ridiculous $15.98 pre-discount price remains a mystery to me.

Hmm...I still haven't opened any of my own bottles (depending on the kindness of others so far). Maybe I'll put one in the queue.

No rush IMO, but if you do, be sure to decant, decant, decant. It needs air.

I wish I could find ESJ around here, I'd love to try it, any variety of it!

Sounds good, and sounds like this is still on the upswing.

I should probably buy more if I see them in stores (although like you I am astounded when I do) as I only have one left.

Ditto ... it is not available in Washington, either. I was in the Portland, OR area for Thanksgiving, and completely forgot to look for some. At my previous visit to Vinopolis (in downtown Portland, 2 blocks from Powell's Books), I found two different offerings of ESJ. I drank the Bone Jolley Gamay Noir and liked it a lot. I still have a bottle of Shadow Syrah to try.

According to Steve's website, the Washington distributor is Triage Wines out of Seattle 206 883 0543.

Don't know if they still carry the wines, but you might check to find out.

Just opened a bottle of the 2006 ESJ Bone-Jolly tonight. Yummy stuff. Was most pleased to have found this in my neighbourhood grocery store in Portland (Fred Meyer) and will go back for more.

Interesting ... the local wine shop owner told me back in June-July it was not available here this year. She likes the wines quite a bit and was disappointed she could not get any for the store. Apparently, it had been available last year, and likely would become available again next year. Not really sure what is going on here. Perhaps just another one of those strange dealings with the WA distribution system.

I believe Steve's website is somewhat less than fully updated. So your experience may make sense. Unfortunately.
