WTN: Back in the saddle, mostly Bordeaux part 2

by Daniel K » Tue Nov 20, 2007 4:48 pm

Ok more Bordeaux as promised, from the same tasting as the previous post.
With only one exception(Montrose) these were all good-great wines I would love to have in my cellar.

Chateau Montrose 02
Very herbal and almost meaty with dark berries in the not so big nose. Showing very little at the moment.
Young and hard with sharp edges a lot of tannin and acid. Young fruit that almost seem to disengrate in the finish. For now, not very good but it will surely improve with age.

Chateau Giscours 02
Showing much better than the Montrose, perfumed nose with dark fruit and herbs, very attractive.
Surprisingly rich taste loaded with fruit, some oak, tannin and acid. Balanced and a very nice wine, to bad I only own a single bottle. Still needs timme though.

Chateau Plince 01
Soft merlot fruit on the nose, barnyard, plums, oaky vanilla. Maturing nicely, a little medicinal perhaps.
Soft and round taste, creamy and soon to be fully mature, would like to have more complexity. A nice wine, but soon forgotten. As a sidenote, our beloved monopoly is offering the Plince 2005 for close to 150$

Chateau Pontet Canet 98
Wow, what a great nose. Meaty and very herbal(thyme) becomes more perfumed in the glass. Complex and very nice.
The taste is full, rich with a long finish and nice tannin. Great to drink now but more time could hardly hurt.

Chateau Gruaud Larose 00
Well, this disapointed me at first. Not sure why though, lovely nose with oak(toasted), red berries and herbs. Very complex on the palate as well, not as much tannin as I thought it would have. Nice finish to, great wine but to me not worth the $

Chateau Lynch Bages 82
From a half bottle, this is so good and my first 82 Bdx. Lovely cedar tobacco nose with sweet fruit(cassis?) So complex and beautiful, almost no need to drink it(almost). Still some fruit left on the palate, very complex, once again cedar and tobacco, sweet almost. Nice finish too, I could actually se myself spending money on a 750 bottle.

Chateau Rieussec 99
At this point I had a case of err....palate fatigue and this was served to warm. However, it was a good wine, with nice structure and fruit.

I finished off with a taste of Pichon Baron 04 but don't ask for a TN (or an impression  )
The play was a great success, but the audience was a disaster

Glad to see tasting notes from you again, hope life gives you time for more. And your note on the 98 PC is most welcome--I have that wine and a bottle a year ago was quite a bit more backward. I vowed not to open another until someone else rang the "all clear".

And glad to see that you posted something so I could mention still another great $14 Cru B, which is still widely available. Doesn't exactly warrant a separate posting. 2000 Ch La Cardonne. A beauty.

Thanks for notess. I carried '02 Montrose to a horizontal couple years ago, one of my least favorite Medocs of the night.
