WTN: Back in the saddle, mostly Bordeaux

It's been way to long since my last post so it's about time to start posting again. I've been swamped at work for the last couple of months and though I've been drinking wine I haven't really written anything down until now. So a few quick tns from memory and then on to the proper stuff.

Tollot-Beaut Savigny Champ Chevrey 02, was starting to come around nicely and should be ready to drink well in a year or so. Not so complex, but balanced with nice fruit and acid.

Virginie de Valandraud 98 is absolutley ready to drink, soft tannin, still fruit left but on day 2 there was a lot of VA. Too much in fact had to pour my last glass out.

Brancaia Il Blu 97 was a real treat. A nice nose of prunes, sweet cherries and herbs. Soft tannin, some fruit left, herbal and very easy to drink. Wish I had more.

Château Ducluzeau 01, it's always nice to find Cru Bourgeois at a good price. This was almost fully mature, very soft and easy to drink. An ok wine but no more.

Weingut Heymann-Löwenstein Schieferterrassen Riesling Auslese Goldkapsel 05 The name of this wine will only be a fraction shorter than the TN. Way to young of course but so rich, complex and balanced it'll be a struggle to keep away from these much longer.

On to the more formal notes from a Bordeaux tasting. It was fun compare the wines in two such different vintages.

Château D'Aiguilhe 04
Very closed on the nose with only some dark fruit and a little oak shining through, didn't really open up during the nasting but seemed promising. Taste was better with oak, fruit, some herbs and of course a lot of tannin an acid. Ok for now, but could be good with a few years in the cellar.

Château D'Aiguilhe 03Much more open for buissnes, sweeter fruit and spices on both nose and palate. Very warm and rich but not over the top so. I liked this far better than the 04.

Clos De L'Oratoire 04
The high percentage of merlot really shines through. Prunes, vanilla not a very interesting nose at all. Same goes for the palate, soft and round with some spices, but boring.

Clos De L'Oratoire 03

Started out better than the 04, warmer and more rich. Barnyard and oak on the nose as well as palate. Not my type of wine at all and at the end of the tasting it was just to much.

Canon La-Gaffeliere 04
Now this is something different, I tasted this a few weeks ago alongside some other 04 Bdx and this was my WOTN then. Not much has changed, still a great wine. Dark fruit, pepper and nice oak. Very complex and charming nose. The taste is almost as good. Rich but not overextracted, good amount of tannin, spices and dark fruit. Long aftertaste and good finish. Wish I had this in my cellar.

Canon La-Gaffeliere 03
A warm rich taste, oak is more toasted here and much more present. As with the other wines the 03 starts out nicely but becomes a bit to much after some time in the glass. To much of evereything but acid, this was still ok, but I would take the 04 over this anytime.

La Mondotte 04 and 03
Both very similar, the color was more black than red. Very concentrated on both nose and palate. Massive amounts of fruits, tannin and oak. With the 04 being the slightly more drinkable. Yes drinkable, these are both two oustanding wines but they are both so young and extracted that one glass is more than enough. The 04 is to my taste the more balanced wine of the two. Would love to try both again in 20 years or so.

Chateau Guiraud 04
Pineapple and coconut, sweet but a bit flabby, not in balance. Perhaps in need of more time but for now not that good.

Chateau Guiraud 03
Much better, once again pineapple and coconut but more complex, more balanced and much more enjoyable to drink. Should be even better with some time in the cellar, but very good now.

More notes to follow in part 2 including Lynch Bages 82, stay tuned.
The play was a great success, but the audience was a disaster

It's good to see the Swedish Chef again and thanks for the notes, especially the Canon La-Gaffeliere and Ch. Guiraud as I have some of the '04 of each.
