WTN: 1998 Musar (white)

by David M. Bueker » Mon Nov 19, 2007 4:44 pm

Served blind over the weekend this had golden color, a nose consisting mostly of gasoline and golden raisins and a watery, nearly lifeless palate that left me wanting something, anything with flavor. So bland I nearly fell asleep.

No evidence of cork taint (to me or anyone else at the table), so if it was corked it was the most eggregious case of stealth taint in recorded history.

Bottle variation in red Musar means that some are great, some are ok, some suck. Bottle variation is white Musar means some suck, some suck even more (ducking as the Musar fans start throwing things at me)

Um, David...you did fall asleep. That was why you woke up scarved like Yasser Arafat. Too bad we were too slow with the camera.

Bland Musar!

That doesn't sound right.

Indeed bland. It was not decanted as far as I know.

And it was Charles Weiss who had the Arrafat towel over his shoulder.

David, the Musar white wine always needs decanting. I sent a bottle of the 1998 to a restaurant for decanting prior to an offline some months ago. I instructed them to open and decant by 8am or as soon as they arrived at the restaurant. Their wine guy doubted me, but did as I requested, after 13 hours decanted, the wine was one of the best of the night. You are very much correct though, I also think Musar is bland when first opened, 8 - 10 - 12 hours though will make a tremendous difference.

Perhaps Bob, but after this wine had been open for a few hours (with some poured out) it was still dull as dishwater. I seriously doubt any amount of decanting time would have helped.

Thanks David, we have just proved that there are wines for all seasons, but not for all men. :-)

I thought we had proved that this bottle of 1998 Musar White was just plain bad.
