Turkey Day

So what are your plans for Thanksgiving and, of course, what wines are you planning to open?

The same as usual .... thankfully. Dinner with family and friends. Champagne before dinner, pinot noir with the meal and a port with the dessert. As to which ones, no final selections have been made but I'm thinking about cracking a bottle of Henriot 1996, some St. Innocent, and perhaps I can be convinced to open that bottle of Warre's 1983 that looks pretty tempting.

Happy Holiday to all!

Dinner with my folks, so there will be fellow WLDG-er Dick Bueker in the house.

Looks like a Kosta-Browne Rosé and a bottle of Burgundy, with some Champagne to start.

Oh - I forgot that Dad is supposed to bring a Joseph Swan Pinot Noir.

We'll be doing a joint dinner with some friends. I haven't yet decided on the wines, but I'll probably bring a lighter Zin and a big white.

Not sure where we are going, or what we are going to eat or drink for the upcoming American Thanksgiving. It is still quite a while away isn't it?

I have offered to bring the wines to a friend's holiday event. I will probably bring a range of zinfandels and pinots, with maybe a couple of Rieslings (sweet whites were popular last year) and Chards. I think Zinfandel would go well with turkey, and Pinot goes well with anything. I have a 2001 Sky Zinfandel and a 2005 Nalle that are more for the wine nerds, but fruitier wines for everyone else.

Dinner at myMother-In-Law's. There will be about 12 of us. She's roasting an 18 lb. bird and I'm smoking a breast. I'm bringing the wine - one store-bought, '06 Innniskillen Gamay, and a few of my home mades, including the traditional Steuben Rose, but it will be the '06, as the '07 isn't ready yet (should be ready for Christmas).
Chico - Hey! This Bottle is empty!
Groucho - That's because it's dry Champagne.

Having suffered the effects of over indulgence on many a Thanksgiving, I have decided to make a point of trying to select low alcohol wines that go well with the Thanksgiving meal. Anyway, although there are no shortage of opinions out there to recommend almost any wine one can think of with the traditional Thanksgiving feast ( one well known wine writer wrote that any good wine can hold it's own on Thanksgiving), in my opinion it makes a wreck out of many serious wines, especially reds.

So, I will go with not too profound low alcohol wines, specifically:

Lakewood Long Stem Red, a blend of NY State Baco Noir, Foch, and Leon Millot

Johnson Estate Marechal Foch from NY State, and also from Johnson Estate their Chambourcin, and maybe also their Chancellor.

A NYS Finger Lakes Region Chambourcin from Goose Watch vineyards

and a Windsor vineyards Reisling from California for the white entry.

And, all of these vinos come in between 11% and 12.5% abv! Perhaps I shall avoid a balloon head this year on the day after TG!

I figure these low and or soft tannin wines will be just right for the assignment.

Anyone else popping FA Hybrids?...I have my suspicions. Tom V

Of course! Home made Leon Millot, a Dry Rose (blend of Foch, Vidal and Leon Milllot and a Steuben Rose, along with a few vineferas (Chard, Riesling and PN/Chard blend bubbly). BTW - Johnson Estate makes an excellent Delaware Ice Wine, but I think it's only available at the winery.
Chico - Hey! This Bottle is empty!
Groucho - That's because it's dry Champagne.

Howie and Paul B have really kindled my interest in hybrid wines. Such a pity I live in the wrong area however. At Xmas intend to offer Soverign Opal from BC Calona winery. That should work with the ham and goose (sort of).

Sounds interesting Howie, is your homemade Leon Millot a rose? I've never made wine myself but I have a couple of acquaintances who sometimes give me a bottle. The last one I had was made with Grenache and was a rose. It was pretty good but was definitely powerful. In fact I've never had a homemade wine that wasn't a killer! Tom V

The Leon Millot is red. The Foch, however, due to poor growing conditions last year, barely had any color, so I blended in Leon Millot to give it color and Vidal for complexity, making the Dry Rose.

Here is the line up as they get ready for tomorrow's death sentence. I aimed for simple and fruity for a crowd of non-geeks, yet interesting to enough to keep my attention. People will enjoy the wine after cocktails. I don't do cocktails.

Zardetto and Mionetto Prosecco Brut (served with chopped strawberries)
Rosa Regale Banfi 06 Bracchetto D'Acqui

Moulin a Vent 05 Pascal Granger Cru Beaujolais
Cantina Zaccagnini "dal tralcetto" 03 Montepulciano D'Abruzzo
Chateau Faugeres St. Emilion Grand Cru 02:

Paulo,
Great lineup! I think those are wines any wine geek would be proud to drink, but will appeal to the less encumbered as well. I will probably be opening similar wines. The exceptions are some Armador Co. zins (Sobon) and some Dr. Frank's bubbly. I look forward to hearing how your crowd likes the lineup.

Paulo, we will expect some notes. Maybe one of the chorus girls can write them down!!! One of the Grill servers will do almost anything for a Prosecco!

Well one daughter and friend are coming here. We are simplifying things this year; turkey, cornbread chestnut stuffing (separate), peas, and sliced Brandywine tomatoes. Pumpkin pie for dessert.

Found an "orphan" '01 Easton Fiddletown Zin in the rack and will chance it. Have some other stuff in reserve just in case.
