A Very Good Wine

by Dan Smothergill » Fri Oct 26, 2007 7:17 pm

The AWS convention next week features a fancy Saturday night dinner. Our Syracuse chapter will be sitting together and each of us will contribute a very good wine. What would you bring for about $50?

$50 buys a great bottle of Riesling, but not as much a great bottle of Champagne. Just think of the Chinon you could buy for a fifty-dollar bill.

You could get a 375 of a pretty good Eiswine for $50. Going another direction, I just had a 2004 Argyle Nuthouse Pinot that was about $50. Champagne is a great idea as well. Needing to spend $50 on a wine is a good problem to have.

Just forget about find a $50 %$@#&*! Cru Burgundy though.

I'm with Bill, though cheap Monprivato might be hard to find.

Otherwise a vintage bottle of Gatinois, Gimmonet, Pierre Peters, etc.

Best,
Joe

One of the big-assed chains has a seemingly endless supply of '98. Every other vintage is much more expensive though.

Piedmonte would be my call. I might be tempted by a CdP too. I suppose one should ask what is for dinner?
Yes, and how many deaths will it take 'til he knows

You missed a great sale and tasting today at Gordon's - 150 wines to taste and 21% off every bottle in the store. FWIW, if you see any 2005 Vietti Scarrone Barbera, grab a bottle.

Amy nearly killed me, so I had to buy only what I could carry.

2 bottles of Vietti Scarrone $28.
1 bottle of Gatinois $35.
1 bottle of Ployez-Jaquemart $35.
1 bottle of 2005 Graillot $23.

If only I had three more arms.

Joe,
Jeannette imposes the same rule onn me. You shoud see how many I can carry on a good sale! Actually, on a normal week, it's how much we both can carry. I usually don't get too much unless there is a sale.
Cheers!

I still would like to know what Dan is eating before giving a definitive answer.

Menu hasn't been announced as far as I know.

I'll be heading out to do some serious shopping Tuesday, armed with my list. Keep those suggestions coming.

Too bad, it would be much simpler if you had some idea of what was being served. I guess you have a general idea of the progression of the courses?

Indeed, you can get the '90 Raffault Picasses for about $40.

Yep, there are a few shops that have the NV version... Gordons, Wine and Cheese Cask and Formaggio Kitchen.

Good stuff!
