WTN: 1991 Bodegas Alejandro Fernandez Ribera del Duero Tinto

  • 1991 Bodegas Alejandro Fernandez Ribera del Duero Tinto Pesquera Reserva - Spain, Castilla y León, Ribera del Duero (10/21/2007)
Brought to dinner at La Tasca with Rob and Brian. The bottle was on ice for the trip in so it was a bit below cellar temperature when opened. Opened at the start of the meal and not decanted; reached full bloom around the two hour mark. Good fill and perfect cork. Youthful looking wine; dark ruby red with no bricking. Bold dark fruits and some earthtones on the nose and the tongue. Good balance, intergated tannins and enough acidic backbone to stand up to the various sausage tapas. Smooth, medium length finish. Clearly I've been remiss in not paying enough attention to what Spanish wines with some age have to offer.

The '06 Fillaboa Albarino was a solid effort and Rob's '87 Vega-Sicilia Valbuena 3 was a real treat. (93 pts.)

Took too long for a lot of us. Depending on where you live, you can pick up a lot of ageable Spanish wines at auction with some years on them already and fairly inexpensively. It's a nice way to make up for lost time.

I really want to do Ribera del Duero in an upcoming Wine Focus! I have some good bottles in the cellar and there is a fair choice on the shelves I`d say. Lets try to push for it?

Bob, I'm in, it will be a good excuse to buy more Spanish wines.

Dan wrote late last month....Bob, I'm in, it will be a good excuse to buy more Spanish wines. Guess we will have to wait, as Douro Open Mike is on right now. Even the Malbec thread has been relegated!!
