Too soon to open 2003 St Innocent Shea??

by Doug Surplus » Tue Oct 16, 2007 2:40 pm

I was looking for a Pinot in my cellar to open with salmon this week and found my choices few. I really need to stock up.

Although I have a couple of cheapies (Concannon, a Bourgogne, a Kenwood) I wanted something more elegant. Since I'm saving the Domaine Serene for a special dinner, I thought about the 03 Shea. I'm just wondering if anyone has any thoughts on it. Too soon? Decant? Don't decant? Drink something else?

Doug, I checked the St. Innocent website for you to see if Mark had any drink/age reccomendations on his 2003's yet, and he doesn't have anything more recent than 2002 (a handy service he provides is drinking windows for all past vintages, if you were not aware). So what the heck, for dinner I opened one of his 2003 Temperence Hills--I didn't buy that vintage, but received a few bottles in the club shipments. The Shea doesn't neccessarily track the TH, but we found the wine pretty open and drinkable. Big black cherry/raspberry fruit with noticeable heat on the finish that seemed half a percent higher than the 13.9% on the bottle. Noticeable tannins got grippier with time, and the second glass was not as enjoyable as the first. This wine seems on the verge of shutting down--not that I've ever known TH's to nap.

Thanks Jenise. for the reply and "sacrifice" of the bottle of TH.

I asked here precisely becuase Mark didn't have the 2003 and up listed.

Well, I think I'm gonna open the Shea tonight. I'll post a note if I do.

So did you open it?

I had this about 2 years ago. It showed well but required rich food. It seemed be on the verge of shutting down. My note says don't touch for 4 years.

Many hate 03 Oregon pinots...an atypical vintage but I think the SIs are very nice.

I'll look for your impressions.

Well, impressions is about all I can offer. I'm having a hard time pinning down what I'm tasting here.

Aroma was a bit barnyardy, which I thought might be a good sign. Like the TH it was big and fruity, but with some heat. No earthiness at all, but the tannins weren't too bad, even with time. However, it got a bit sweeter as time went on - even more so on the second night. Drinkable, but not what I like for Pinot Noir

I don't have enough experience with Pinot, esp Oregon Pinot to know if it's this particular wine, the vintage or a combination. I do know that an earlier Shea (01 IIRC) was quite tasty and the Seven Springs I've had have all been wonderful. Also, the 05 TH I got in the spring club shipment was very nice.
