WTN: Kerner in comparative perspective

by Keith M » Wed Oct 10, 2007 9:43 am

This was a neat experience for me, not only because the wine was made from a variety of grape which I had never taken notes on before (and I have a weakness for seeking out and trying new varieties), but the previous two vintages of the same wine by the same producer were commented on by Robin and Bob Ross, so I could 'compare notes', as it were:

WTN /WineAdvisor: Offbeat grape - Kerner (Abbazia di Novacella '04)
WTN: Kerner Abbazia di Novacella 2005

All sorts of great background info in those threads as well . . . here's my take on the 2006

2006 Stiftskellerei Neustift/Abbazia di Novacella Eisacktaler/Valle Isarco Kerner (Valle Isarco/Eisacktaler DOC, Alto Adige/Südtirol, Trentino-Alto Adige, northeastern Italy) 14% – appears straw gold, smell quite tropical, toward mango/pineapple/banana/lime, with air, more perfume and floral, bit sweet on nose, nice, mouthfeel medium thick, just background hint of spritz, taste strong banana smoothie element, full body, full flavor, acidic spritz which is quite nice, finish of lime, mouthwatering acidity works great with food (in this case a winter squash gratin) and acidity also works great for wine on its own, makes the strong flavor profile tasty again and again, quite enjoyable through the last glass, at 9 euro I am glad I picked up a bottle, it performed better than I had expected, my first Kerner and I was quite impressed

Nice, as a matter of fact, Gray Monk in BC also produces a Kerner but I do not have any TN. Sorry.

I've had the Grey Monk Kerner - it's nice as a curiosity. They also make Sigerrebe which is even more of a curiosity.
