Question for David Bueker or someone

by JC (NC) » Tue Oct 09, 2007 10:47 am

I have one bottle of 2001 Muller-Catoir Haardter Burgergarten Riesling Spatlese Trocken. Since it's a Trocken wine, should it be opened soon or can I expect it to have some longevity?

Good trockens (and Catoir always made good trockens) can go a ways. The German Wine Guide (Diel/Payne) annually does a "ten years after" tasting, so I would think you can safely get 10 years out of it. Terry Theise gives a drinking window of 3-15 years, and he has just a little background in German wine. I would say you are safely in the middle of the window.

Drink it with a thought for its maker, Hans-Gunter Schwarz, who left Catoir after that miraculous vintage.

And as for comforter and mensch (word association thread) they have nothing to do with one-another. It's just what popped into my head at that moment.

I've got the '01 Haardter Herrenletten Spatlese - I was thinking 5 or 8 years, sound right to you?

Dale - sweet spatlese? If so then it's been drinking really well since day 1 and I see no reason to fret either drinking it now or waiting another 2-4 years.
